A&T race home by narrow margin

Astley and Tyldesley Cycle Speedway team came out on top against local rivals Bury, in Sunday's Northern League match at Gin Pit.

After a close start to the match, A & T recorded two successive heat wins to lead by six points at the half way stage.

Bury immediately hit back with a surprise race win and took a slender one point lead with just two races remaining.

Bury's Mike Hewitson hit the front in the last race, but a great ride by A & T captain Tomasz Wlodarczyk saw him reel in the Scottish international and pass him on the last lap to take the race win.

Roy Heslop took third place and A & T took the win by 88 - 86, amidst much jubilation in the pits.

Wlodarczyk and Remi Burchardt both raced unbeaten, on a track made heavy in the wintry conditions, with good scores from their fellow Polish internationals, Darek Kurkowski and Tomasz Szwajorek, despite both suffering a race exclusion each.

A & T hosted the opening Northern Regional Round of the British Youth & Junior League series on Saturday.

A & T's youngsters put in some good performances, to take third place out of five teams, in a match won by Sheffield.

Adam Phillips raced unbeaten in the U-10 category and won the Grand Prix Final, ahead of teammate Adam Watson.

Ben Dickenson made an impressive debut in the U-16 category, top scoring in the qualifying races, before finishing third in the Grand Prix Final.
