Bolton boys in penalty shootout heartbreak

BOLTON Boys U15s' dreams of getting to the last 16 in a national competition were dashed cruelly after they came back from three goals down only to lose in the penalty shootout.

As in the previous round the visiting team opened the scoring in the fourth minute and dominated the game.

The usual heroics from the Bolton keeper and defence kept them in the game, but a penalty corner for the visitors in the 29th minute and open play goal late in the half appeared to put the game out of reach.

Some nothing-to-lose tactical changes after the interval reaped the reward of a Bolton goal on 39 minutes by Chris Brynes.

Bolton continued to apply pressure to the Doncaster defence and were given a penalty corner, which Phil Allmark put away.

The game then developed into an end-to-end affair with Doncaster failing to capitalise on their numerous chances.

The effort put in by Bolton was highlighted by Gareth Wright who intercepted a 16-yard hit-out, moved into the D and was then fouled by the last defender, which gave Bolton the opportunity to equal the score with a penalty stroke.

Jack Dutton, with a stance similar to Jonny Wilkinson, duly converted on 53 minutes to the delight of his team-mates and the parental support.

The equaliser kick-started the Doncaster team who started to play the dominating hockey of the first half, but they were unable to find the net, leaving the scores level after the regulation time.

The rules of the competition meant penalty strokes would decide the team to progress into the next round.

Bolton were first up, and opened with a goal.

The next eight attempts were either saved or missed the target, which meant Doncaster had to miss on the last attempt in order for Bolton to win.

This was not to be and the score after the best-of-five ended 1-1.

It went to sudden-death but only lasted one round, with Doncaster scoring theirs despite the Bolton keeper getting a hand on the ball.

l The snowy conditions meant that all the senior teams did not play at the weekend.
