Centurions in no rush to appoint boss

LEIGH Centurions are not rushing to name a new head coach to replace Darren Shaw who stood down last week.

It could be at least another two weeks before the new man is in place.

Advertisements were placed in the rugby league trade press this week and applications only close on Friday, April 25. Only then will the club shortlist and interview.

Chief Executive Allan Rowley says: "We want to wait and see exactly who is out there because this is a very important decision for the club."

Part of Leigh's recruitment advertisement reads: "As well as holding all the relevant coaching qualifications, applicants for this exciting and challenging position should have excellent leadership, motivation and communication skills and be able to work effectively in a demanding and competitive environment."

Former Super League coaches Neil Kelly and Karl Harrison, pictured, are considered to be the early front-runners for the Hilton Park vacancy. Former Leigh boss Ian Millward and Gateshead's former Castleford coach, Dave Woods, could also come into contention.

"Naturally enough we've already been linked with a number of coaches and obviously two that will be in the forefront of people's minds are Neil Kelly and Karl Harrison," says Rowley. "Then there's Ian Millward who has synergy with the club having started his English career here.

"Ian is weighing up his options at the moment but if he does decide to come back to England then we would be foolish not to be interested in him.

"Our goals lie in Super League and to achieve that we want a Super League-standard coach. It will be very interesting to see who does apply."

Rowley is also keen to pay tribute to Shaw's 18-month tenure at Hilton Park.

"I have nothing but the utmost respect for Darren. He did a good job in difficult circumstances.

"We won't bear the fruits of his labour on the club's infrastructure for a while yet but he's done a terrific job and has worked his socks off."
