Warrington taken all the way by Leigh

Leigh 15 Warrington 28

LEIGH Centurions pushed Super League giants Warrington all the way in their Carnegie Challenge Cup fourth round tie.

The home side held Warrington to a 6-0 lead for over 30 minutes and it was only a try right on the bell at the end of the first half that gave the Wolves a comfortable 16-0 cushion.

But Leigh had the Wolves on the ropes for long periods of the second half and two late scores from the Centurions gave the final scoreline a fair reflection.

Warrington took an early lead when the half-back slipped through the defence and hooker Jon Clarke supported for a try that Chris Hicks converted.

Warrington wasted a couple of good opportunities before a long, wide pass from Lee Briers got winger Chris Riley in at the corner.

The Wolves grabbed their third try when Ben Harrison was cut down on the line for Hicks to drive over.

Leigh didn't have to wait long to open their account in the second-half. Influential scrum-half Ian Watson regathered his own grubber kick after it bounced off a forest of Warrington legs to plunge over and add the extra points.

Kevin Penny scrambled in for a try at the corner to make it 22-6. That was stretched to 28-6 when prop Paul Rauhihi muscled his way over with eight minutes left.

Doran punched a hole in the defence and rookie prop Mike Morrison stretched over for his first try in Leigh colours and, right on the bell, full-back Dennis Moran's explosive break and accurate pass sent Adam Rudd in at the corner.
