Warriors on alert after flying start

RUGBY LEAGUE: Michael Maguire refuses to let his Wigan players become complacent after their impressive start to the Super League season.

“The big thing you can see is the improvement in the team,” the Warriors coach said, reflecting on last week’s 38-6 romp over Crusaders.

“It’s a matter of knuckling down and working on the things we need to do.

“Every game is important for me. We made a good start and obviously we have to continue that.”

Tonight Warriors come up against Hull KR who will be hoping to maintain their impressive record at the DW Stadium, where they have won on two of their three previous visits.

Rovers second-rower Clint Newton, who played at Melbourne Storm under his fellow Australian, Maguire, is tipping the Warriors to prosper under the shrewd management of their new boss.

“They have always had good players at Wigan but I think Michael will be focusing hard on their wrestle technique and their defence,” said Newton.

“That was something we prided ourselves on at Melbourne and I know he will have brought that to Wigan. They have never had a problem with their attack but maybe they needed to tighten their defence.”
