Wigan Warriors 58 Catalans 0

RUGBY LEAGUE: Pat Richards claimed a stunning five-try haul as leaders Wigan destroyed woeful Catalans to maintain their 100 per cent start to the Engage Super League season.

The rangy wing touched down in the ninth, 15th, 20th, 37th and 75th minutes as the rampant Warriors sealed their fourth successive win in remarkable fashion.

Loose forward Sean O’Loughlin and wing Darrell Goulding also went over in the first half before Thomas Leuluai and George Carmont (two) got in on the act after the break.

Richards converted all but one of his side’s 10 tries in a personal 38-point haul which further fuelled the feelgood factor engulfing the famous old club right now.

The once mighty Warriors have not lifted a trophy since 2002 but new coach Michael Maguire has quickly fashioned a side who look capable of mounting a credible challenge this year.

They were far too vibrant for Catalans, who fell behind when Carmont showed intelligence to find Richards with a neat short offload and he bustled over in the left corner.

Richards’ second try arrived in the 15th minute when Mark Riddell found Sam Tomkins and the England stand-off produced a rapier-like offload to Amos Roberts to his left.

Roberts advanced forward at pace and found Richards, whose desire was too much for Catalans as he crashed over the line in the left corner again.

The Warriors were in total control and never looked back after their fine start
