A BOLTON football team need your help to win a regional competition and get funding for a new dawn.

Breightmet United Wanderers have been running in the area since May 2009.

The club was formed to give the kids of Breightmet some community spirit as well as being part of a family-focused club.

They run teams from under-10s right up to u15s with a men's five-a-side that are current double champions in the Powerleague.

But now they want supporters and readers to help get the funding needed for a project to make them feel at home.

Manager Wayne Gates said: “When we started, it was ran by two old grandparents who realised that people were hanging around the Talbot with not a lot to do.

“We have now got 15,000 people who have played for the team and helped give something for them to do.

“We enjoy getting as many kids down playing football and enjoying it.”

The Wanderers are one of four local projects nominated for the Lloyds Community Heroes Award.

They are up against Maltby Residents’ Association, Chesham Fold Community Association and Precious Gems.

Gates added: “We need as many people to get behind us and vote.

“We have 130 kids playing each week so we know we will probably have lots of families wanting to support us.

“But we could still do with as many people behind us. The plan is to improve the fencing at a permanent base in Bolton.

“If we can get the money and added publicity then we can push forward with plans to create a proper home for us.”

The club has had an illustrious past with Elaine Dolan named Bolton Woman of the Year in 2010 and there have been no awards recently so still holds the title.

Gates says people can vote via text (charged at the mobile standard rate) or via the website.

Wanderers U15s side wanted to get in on the act of promoting the initiative after their 8-2 victory against Highfield on Wednesday night.

Wanderers signalled their intentions early on and opened the scoring when a pass by Jordan Richards found Harrison Heaton who slotted the ball past the keeper.

They doubled their lead soon after when Cameron Cleary drove into space and cut the ball inside to score.

There was no respite for Highfield as last season’s top-scorer Marcus Makin extended the lead to 3-0.

Highfield pulled one back before hard-press tactics paid off as Wanderers forced a string of saves from the Highfield keeper. In the second half, they extended their lead when a beautiful ball into the box was volleyed home by David Sheeran.

They added to their tally when Makin played a lovely ball to Casey Green to get on the scoresheet.

Highfield switched off for a second then Liam Haycock and Ben Cooper found Jake Brown who finished well.

There was still time for Makin to wrap up his hat-trick and Green to get his second of the night.
