A WESTHOUGHTON teenager was part of the England hockey team which won gold at the Sainsbury’s School Games.
James Sutcliffe helped one of the three England sides – Englnd White – to victory in the international event in Manchester last weekend.
The 17-year-old former Westhoughton High School pupil scored a goal in each of the group games as his side beat Wales 6-0 and Ulster 2-1.
He then made his mark in the final with the opening goal – an individual effort which saw him go one-on-one with the goalkeeper before lifting the ball over his head – as they beat England Red 2-1 in the final.
Jack England, also 17 and from Westhoughton, played for the England Blue side who finished second in their group and lost the bronze medal game against Ulster.
The pair both started playing hockey at The Gates Primary School in Westhoughton, both now go to Rossall School at Fleetwood due to their hockey skills, and play together at Preston Hockey Club.
