ATHERTON Collieries went goal crazy as they thrashed local rivals Daisy Hill 8-0 in the first round of the FA Vase.

The match between the North West Counties League First Division rivals was effectively over after just seven minutes when the visitors raced into a 3-0 lead.

The first goal came on four minutes when Mark Truffas swung the ball towards the near post where Kris Holt was on hand to head past Daisy goalkeeper Aaron Ashley. A minute later Brad Cooke scored before arguably the best goal on seven minutes when Mark Battersby pivoted and chipped over the Daisy defence for Ben Hardcastle to take one touch and volley home.

Daisy were reduced to 10 men on 32 minutes when defender Simon Farrell brought down Cooke and Battersby made it 4-0.

Four minutes later it was 5-0 when Mark Battersby sent ex-Daisy player Matty Boland through to curl a shot around Ashley from the edge of the area.

Battersby made it six a minute before the break when he rounded the keeper, and it was 7-0 on 55 minutes through Hardcastle before Jordan Cover tapped in the final goal and Battersby missed a penalty.

Colls will host Northern League side Seaham Red Star in the next round on November 22.

Atherton LR slipped down to sixth place in Division One following a 1-1 draw at struggling Litherland REMYCA. The home side took the lead from the spot on 40 minutes before Jon Stephenson equalised on the stroke of half time.
