OSCAR Threlkeld was praised for his superb debut at Hillsborough as Dougie Freedman finally gave youth a go on the penultimate weekend of last season.

Andy Kellett and Tom Youngs also excelled in second-half cameos as Wanderers strolled to a convincing win thanks to goals from Neil Danns, Chung-Yong Lee and Liam Trotter.

Threlkeld was rushed into action after an injury to Aston Villa loanee Alan Hutton, ahead of former Sheffield Wednesday trainee Hayden White.

And Freedman was delighted with how the Radcliffe youngster coped in his first professional start.

“As debuts go, and I’ve given a lot in my short period in management here and at Crystal Palace, I felt it was one of the best I’ve come across, especially up against some quick wingers in (Jeremy) Helan and (Michail) Antonio,” Freedman said.

“I think Oscar did very well and it’s a credit to him and his family how he handled the occasion.

“Young Andy loved every minute out there. And Tom Youngs – I’ve never seen anyone take a tracksuit off so quickly as when I told him he was going on.”
