BEING in charge of one of the area’s best-known leagues is a challenging job.

But each week, Warren Barlow gives a unique insight into the goings-on behind the scenes in the Bolton, Bury and District Football League in his own column.

In his latest column, Warren lifts the lid on preparations for the league's annual futsal tournament.

This week has been another busy week for the Bolton, Bury and District Football League committee with planning, meetings, purchases and lots of administration to complete.

We are running a futsal competition for our under-13s throughout the summer period and futsal goals and balls have been ordered, as have some very nice trophies for the lucky winners and runners up.

We have secured the venue, which will be ESSA Academy and Manchester Velodrome, which will coincide with a finals day and an exhibition game between Manchester Futsal Club and Kevin Davies' select side, which may include the likes of Ivan Campo and Jay Jay Okocha.

This will truly be a memorable occasion for all the youngsters taking part and will also be an opportunity for those who have yet to witness futsal to do so at an adult and junior level.

On a less exciting level, Gary Russell and I attended the Lancashire FA in order to review and have our many league rules audited.

Those that know me, will realise that I am not a fan of the FA's youth rules, which are based on an adult form of the game, with stringent rules on everything from signing players, reporting results, ball size, pitch size and goal size.

I do laugh when a coach contacts me to report a pitch being a yard too short at u10s after they read it in the rules.

The mini-soccer game was built around the ethos of play anywhere, anytime and in any format, as it was derived from the "jumpers for goalposts" model.

The BBDFL was formed in 1996 and I know change does takes time, so I am sure we will get bespoke junior rules eventually.

Finally, a huge thanks to the East Lancashire Football Alliance, Russell Walmsley, Burnley Academy, Bolton Arena and all those teams and officials who supported our u15s inter-league competition, which was a huge success.

The BBDFL won the competition by 25 points to 19.
