TURTON FC head into the new West Lancashire Football League Division One season believing they have ‘unfinished business’ in their quest to be promoted to the top flight.

Neil Johnson’s side may have lost 6-4 to Old Bolts on Saturday, with Kieran Sisson (two), Luke Bradbury and Rick Battersby on target for the Thomason Fold side, but chairman Peter Gray believes developments both on and off the pitch will put them in a good position for the season.

Turton missed out on promotion last year after failing to meet a ground-grading deadline set by West Lancashire League officials last year.

He said: “We are quite bullish and determined to start again. We have kept the entire squad and added new faces and are confident we can go up this time.

“The West Lancashire League officials visited us during the summer to say that our ground was up to standard for promotion.

“We all want to go one better this season by winning Division One and also bringing home the Division One trophy.”

Among the new faces include striker Luke Bradbury, centre-half Matt Warburton and forward Sam Crook, but Gray believes it is another player who will have a huge impact this season.

“Kieran Sisson was attracting attention from North West Counties sides as well as teams from higher divisions,” said Gray.

“Even though he is not a new signing it is boost to have him back on board as he scored more than 40 goals for us. He is going to be important for us.”

Gray believes Division One is going to be a tough task with local teams flying the flag.

He said: “It will be exciting as Tempest United are stronger, then Ladybridge are a good side who have just been promoted.

“No-one came down from the top flight and I think Burscough Richmond and Poulton will be tough too.

“We play Tempest and Ladybridge in the first month, so we should have a better idea of where we are then.”
