Old Links enjoy festival success

HUNDREDS of golfers from all over the North of England and the Midlands gathered at Old Links last weekend for the annual Festival of Golf.

The four days were blessed with beautiful weather and, with the course in pristine condition, having been set up for the BGA championship, there were many enthusiastic comments about the quality of the course, the competitions and the organisation.

There was some impressive golf played in the individual competitions all of which were fully subscribed.

The Thursday Texas Scramble Four Man competition was won by Bob Mansfield (OL), Alan McKenzie (OL), Stuart Richardson (OL) and Simon Wooff (Gt Lever) with the Walton Hall team of T. Swift, S Thompson, P Orr and P Jackson taking second place.

The Mixed event was won by the Old Links combination of Ken Baker, Elaine Hamer and Norman and Dorothy Fulton. Second prize went to the team of D and L Fort (OL), S Fort (Burghley) and B Brooks (OL).

Friday was the Four Man Team event (two to score) won by John Maree, Matt Buckley, Adam Freeman and Mick Wallace Jnr (all Old Links) with 83 stableford points. Second place went to a team from Willow Valley comprising C Nuttall, N Richardson, N Hartley and C Buzzard (82 points).

Saturday’s Open Four Ball was won by the Old Links pairing of Simon Whittaker and David Jones who shot a betterball gross of 66 (net 62). Simon Wooff (Gt Lever) and Bob Mansfield (OL) took second place with Kevin Shea (OL) and Barry Harding (Dunscar) third.

The Open Mixed competiton held on Sunday was won by the father-daughter combination of Mo and Kate Rowthore from Sale Golf Club. David and Pam Hiles (Hawkstone Park) took second prize with Steve Best (Prestbury) and Gemma Clewes (Sale) in third place.
