Bolton Golf Association suffered another mauling in their second Lancashire Scratch League match away at Hopwood on Monday when they went down 5½-1½ to a strong Manchester team.
Bolton were in contention at the turn, but the home side, which featured a number of former county players, took three of the games to the 18th winning all by just one hole.
Former BGA champion Steve Bryan was the only Bolton winner. He took advantage of his 2-up lead at the halfway stage and finally claimed a one hole victory over Gary Spann of Stand.
Tim Philbin, the newly crowned Bolton champion, looked comfortable against Craig Cuthbert until a costly loss of ball on the 15th broke his momentum and he lost by one hole.
Philbin echoed the Bolton player’s comments when he said: “You need to know your way around Hopwood and its penal rough.
“I hit some apparently good drives only to find myself in trouble for my second shots.”
This loss keeps Bolton at the bottom of their league and much now depends on the last two matches against Bury and East Lancs in July.
