BOXING: Former squaddie Rick Godding is aiming to give his army of fans something to cheer about when he takes on William Warburton.
The Blackrod bomber is looking to continue his unbeaten record when he steps into the ring at Leigh’s Indoor Sports Centre tonight.
Godding is expecting plenty of his supporters to make the short journey to watch him in action.
And the 25-year-old light-welterweight, who spent five years in the forces, wants to turn on the style as he targets an 11th straight victory.
“I want to put on a good performance and show everyone what I can do,” he said.
“I always have good support and I am expecting quite a few to be there on Friday.
“As well as people from Bolton, a lot of the lads I used to be in the army with come along, although a lot of them have just gone over to Afghanistan.”
While some of his former colleagues have headed off to war, Godding is not expecting too much of a battle in the ring against Atherton’s Warburton.
The 22-year-old has won just once in 10 fights, while Godding is determined to impress after disappointing in his last outing against Youssef Al Hamidi in September.
“He’s not got the best record,” he said. “I wasn’t happy with how I fought last time.
“I had a few weight issues and that really affected me.”
Godding is fighting on the undercard of Belfast’s Martin Lindsay’s British featherweight title fight against Welshman Jamie Arthur. Olympic bronze medallist David Price is also in action.
