GARY Megson has refused to pin the blame for Wanderers' perilous Premiership plight on the sale of Nicolas Anelka.
The Bolton boss admits a shortage of goals - they have scored just five in their last nine games - has dented their survival hopes.
But he doesn't subscribe to the theory that there would be no relegation worries if Wanderers had not sold their top scorer to Chelsea for £15million in January.
advertisement
"When I arrived, Nic had scored five or six goals and we were bottom of the table, by one point, behind Derby," Megson said.
Reader Poll Can Wanderers beat Manchester City?
YES 57.6%
NO 42.4%
"So it doesn't follow that, if Nic had stayed, we'd have done this or done that."
He concedes Wanderers must increase their strike rate if they are to survive in the Premiership.
With just one Premiership win since Anelka left, supporters fear their club is now in grave danger of paying a high price for selling their top scorer.
But the manager says everyone must focus on the games to come rather than dwell on the past.
"It was one of those things we couldn't do anything about," he said of the Anelka transfer.
"I knew that when that window was coming round there was a huge chance that Nicolas would be joining one of three clubs.
"He wanted to go to a club playing Champions League football, which you can't blame him for.
"Everything was better for him, financially, although he was really well paid here. It was just a fait accompli, you couldn't do anything about it and it's happened now. You can keep revisiting it, but I find it strange people saying we could have been doing this and we could have been doing that. We weren't doing it when Nic was here.
"I've heard there's been criticism of Nic at Chelsea, which I find strange, that he isn't scoring goals, and we're killing ourselves because he's gone.
"I accept that we are not scoring enough goals to get ourselves out of the position we are in and that's something that's got to change."

When Big Sam was at the helm we had a first class man manager a team of average players with a sprinkling of top quality but a third rate board of directors.
Now we have a third rate manager joining a third rate board of directors, sold our sprinkling of quality and since Sam left, with the exception of Cahill & Steinsson bought a bunch of third rate players!
And we wonder why it's all gone belly up?

I wish Relegation Megson would stop suggesting that he has completely turned the wanderers around. We were bottom when he arrived and we are now third from bottom. Hardly a massive achievement. The guy has got an over inflated opinion of his own abilities. When reporting on the united game the Guardian correspondent said that Bolton looked like they were going to be added to 'the list of clubs relegated under Megson'. I still can't believe we employed him and yet he talks as if we are lucky to have him. Speechless!

I think it's time for Gary to do his talking on the psychiatrist's couch.
Some people are born to greatness.
Some people have greatness thrust upon them.
....meanwhile we've got someone called Gary.
They also say you get the leaders you deserve so I guess it's all our fault anyway.
Shucks.

"I've been at other places where I knew we were going down from the minute I arrived."
Leave Gary alone, the bloke is a grafter! With other clubs relegation was a foregone conclusion, its taken a lot of work behind the scheans to turn us into relegation material!

I have just seen the pole "can wanderers beat ciy" in my opinion with this manager and his tactics and team choices can we ****. He needs to be got rid of now and get a cartaker in, the one from George Toms in Kearsley should be ok and he wont want paying a great deal either.

What a joke!!!!
They knew Anelka was going months before and didnt get a replacement. Now no one is scoring, 5-6 by Anelka is better than that.
Megsons media strategy lacks integrity and intelligence........
...sorry mate the wool isnt over my eyes........just the sheep who the club rely on !

If you knew he was going then why didn't you put into place these so called "contingency plans". Unless the contingency was to loan a useless, slow donkey who couldn't even get into a championship team.
If that is all we are worth, then get out of our club now as you are a bigger joke than Raziak, Cohen and Taylor. You are now a proven liar, as the previous post by wrothy reminded us of. Even if we manage to stay up, I would rather have Sam back. Megson is a talentless loser. End of.

where is Gartside in all this? surely as someone in charge of the company you cannot be happy with this situation. In any other company if results were so poor changes would be made but the silence from within the club is deafening. Have you any comment to make about this present situation or are you too busy putting together a take over package and negotiating your fat fee?

Happy Easter, Trotter and all
With this Meite thing, and players lacking match fitness. I have been saying for months, the reserves should be used to keep fringe players fit and also underperforming first teamers.
Ironically, the players lacking match fitness have been thrown into some of our most difficult games and on most occassions, performed with credit.
I feel horrible saying this, but maybe I would swap a loss tomorrow if it got Megson the sack at 5PM, and we could have a fresh start for remaining games. We are going nowhere but down with this idiot.

It wasn't the fact that Anelka left,it was the fact that he wasn't replaced.
You are the manager, its your job, you are a useless ginger tw@t, do not come out patronising us to try to cover up your ineptitude. Do the honourable thing and resign and then get a job managing under 5s somewhere.

We all worried about this when Megson was appointed anyway, and nothing's happened since to disabuse us of the idea. In fact, the choices of teams, benches, substitutions all indicate Megson doesn't want to win many games.

Happy Easter to you too [bold]Julie[/bold] , what a nice person you are, your comments come from the heart and are of troubled circumstances at the Reebok, our plight is in the hands of firstly Gartside and more on a daily basis Megson who day by day is digging a deeper hole for himself with the fans, I understand where you are coming from regarding swapping the Premiership if Megson goes but I would go one better and let by luck Megson get us out of trouble then sack him at the end of the season, rumour has it that Eddie Davies wants out and I feel that Gartside will go to if that is the case (buyout) so come next season we can start afresh with new Owners and new manager.

When we are relegated whats the plan then? A complete clearout or all the over paid superstars, using the 'Anelka' money to clear the debt and then buying a few has beens and Rasiaks to mount our promotion challenge. Add to this a massive fall in season tickets and the retention of our ilustrious manager. Looks like were heading for a big recession!

I just cant help thinking that with him, we are certs to go down. Dafter things have happened than a Caretaker brought in with 8 games left. I really think most of the players would welcome a change and we would see a change for the better on the pitch.

Trotter in the early seventies when I started watching. To gain tickets for the games home and away I sold weekly bingo tickets. On occasions in the summer I met players from all over the world who had paid their own expenses to have a trial at Bolton. Not because of the money but the prestige of playing for a historic club like ours. Now those days have well and truly gone. And the likes of Nat and his elk are just distant memories to us.The current generation are witnessing the effects of big business and globalisation on our game. And I get the clear impression from the media and the FA Premier that we're not welcome at the party.

How do we think Sam feels about the plight of our club at the moment. All he built up over the seven years, the great players he somehow managed to bring in, qualifying 'little Bolton' for Europe twice only for us to throw a game. OK he's gone and won't come back but as he one said Bolton was his 'spiritual home' and he is still a great fan. He must be gutted. Seven years of progress screwed up in 9 months courtesy of an unambitious board and bad managerial appointments (understatements).

He left a bitter man and he knew that by taking the actions he did that we would struggle.Sure he did it to get rid of Gartside. And would come back if Gartside is pushed out and he is given the resources to finish the job he started. But I can't see that happening. So we'll just have to put up with it 'til the end of the season and see what's what.

Yeah he did a great job of leaving us in the sh*te.Took all his backroom team to Barcodes and left us with Cid,Meite and LSL.
He left a bitter man and he knew that by taking the actions he did that we would struggle.Sure he did it to get rid of Gartside. And would come back if Gartside is pushed out and he is given the resources to finish the job he started. But I can't see that happening. So we'll just have to put up with it 'til the end of the season and see what's what.

the wigan game was an exceptionally poor performance but the man united game showed that this squad at least has some character. Although the table is looking bad, i believe we have got the squad, in terms of character and work rate, that can get us out of this position.

I agree we have a squad to avoid relegation however, we have a manager who cannot utilise the squad and continues with players who are in capable of getting results. As for tactics Megson is still trying to find the tin. We are not missing Anelka great statement as the goals have been flowing since his departure get rid of the Stool NOW.

what a load of sh 1 t megson comes out with.
hes obviously not wondering what would have been had we kept anelka and signed taylor steinsson and cahill. also agree with julies comments earlier in the post about fringe players playing for the reserves. this was a common sight a few years ago but now the reserves is the youth team and our youth team is the reserves 'B' squad. i wonder how many times meite mccann hunt stelios etc etc have played for the reserves this season.
every wanderers fan is saying the same stuff on whatever forum you go on. we cant all be wrong can we?

Reevesey i know were your comming from however, we have a man who has lost every relegation battle and has taken us into this position when we had relative safety. Then he will harp back on the point as to we were at the foot of the table when he arrived well we had a better squad than our position was due to ineptitude on behalf of LSL. Results picked up immediately not because we had the best manager it was the fact that the dressing room was lost under LSL. We took 9 points in the first six league games and since then we have taken 11 points in 14 games as the reality hit home and his negative tactics took over with benches that did not contain an attacker and the insistance of playing the likes of Cohen and Raziak when better players are avialable. He has not cottoned onto the facts that defending at all times is not always the best policy. We need a manager who can get us out of this situation and the best men for the job at the current time are Reidy or Big Sam or both and its about time that our board woke up and realise the situation we are in.

Hi guys so whats all the fuss about Anelka?
He is playing with what is supposed to be the best team in the premier. how many goals has he scored????? Yes he did well at Bolton, we were at the bottom when he was with us, so whats changed, Two managers, and a side that as not even made a real attempt to get out or the bottom half dozen,
We played against 10 men, a team who like us need the points and we don`t even score. The difference is they needed to win at all costs and the players all responded, when we have a player who refuses to play, we are going down.
The manager Mr Megson whether you back him or not is trying his best to get the players he has got to respond to the situaion they are in.Its to late now to kick the guy, we need him he is all we have, give him a the chance he still believes we will not go down. We must win the next game, It will be a big game against M. City. Who`s away record should give us some hope. It could all depend on how the other bottom teams play. but that would not even count as long as we are in the bottom three. Keep the faith. amen

Reidy hasnt managed for ages so that wont work, the only other option is Sam and he wont come near the Reebok til Gartside has gone they bridge between them has severley been burned without a repair in sight.
So whats the other option?

how can he say he didnt regret his team selection, how can he not apologise to us fans after a lot of us, me personally spent over 600 quid to go see us in lisbon.
and i cannot understand how he can sit there and say we would still be where we are with anelka. i honeslty feel like punchig this computer screen. that is by far the biggest load of rubbish i've heard since some of u were slagging of nolan and saying his goals arent important.
IF WE HAD ANELKA WE WOULD HAVE 9 MORE POINTS AS U KEEP PLAYING DAVIES WHO CANT SCORE FOR SH*T. HE IS PROB THE WORST GOALSCORING CENTRE FORWARD OF ALL TIME. AND U KNOW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE RUINED THIS CLUB

The last five results have built a coffin for the wanderers, put the body in it and brought it to the graveside.
A loss tomorrow puts the coffin in the hole and the remaining matches simply shovel **** over it. A win will be like a sudden knocking sound from within the box - is the old *** alive still? The remaining matches will determine whether we were hearing things or not. A draw will be like Megson reading the eulogy - a pack of lies about things that could have been...

Megson quote " I've been at other places where I knew we were going down from the minute I arrived".
Well Gary at least there's one thing we can all agree on. Everyone in Bolton (Cheshire not included) had the same thought when you arrived, but you deserve some credit for admitting it.

“For a club like Bolton, European football is an almost unimaginable boon. To disrespect it, as Megson did, by resting nine first-teamers for a game in Lisbon they made no real effort to win, was an unpardonable abdication of responsibility.”

i dont really know what system we are playing at the moment. we arent playing counter attack because we havent got a pace. we arent playing long ball and getting bodies in the box because we just arent. i dont really know what we are doing? all i know is for a team near the bottom and cant score for sh*t we are playing shockingly negatively.
and stop kidding your self and defending gartside, yes anelka was tempted to go but also said he'd be happy to stay at bolton. you kicked him out and had no real effort to get in a replacement. stop feeding us lies, we didnt bid for lita, steve copell said we didnt, and if we did, reading have let him go out on loan so i find it highly unlikely they would turn down a bid. at least he would have scored some bloody goals.
get real, anelka's loss is the reason for our demise and if u came on this site in january us fans would have told u this was going to happen! so if we cant see it why the hell couldnt u !!!!!!!!!

its nice too see some comments from people who feel the same way i do( god man and tc turton)
football in the premier league is a business and we had a succesfull manager and business, we should have looked to replace the manager with another proven succesful manager like spurs and city did, but oh no, mr gartside and the board did it on the cheap, we employed a manager who has had no success and caused a player revolt at forest, we are heading for relegation and the business side, poor attendances etc, sacrificed europe camapaign have followed along just as we knew they would, now the player revolts are starting ( Meite) i feel i have been very let down by gartside and the board we waited years for some success and now we have thrown it all away

To Breezeblock Manchester - I have a cardboard box in my garage which could probably do a better job than our present manager. We won't I suspect, have to wait long for the next gaff following the debacles of Lisbon, Wigan and Miete

Relegation Megson is treating the fans as he apparently treats the players- like children! You only have to look at the number of goals we have scored since Anelka left and the number we scored before he was sold. Anelka was one of the league's leading goalscorers .We often look now as if we couldn't score if we played all night. We will never know whether any replacement would have made any real difference for there is always a risk with new signings, particularl
y strikers, but to do nothing was suicidal and utterly irresponsible.

Can't help thinking that Gartside is the new Risdale. Pushes to the front when things go well, living the dream. Disappears when the going gets tough. Sadly, not man enough to come out and talk the fans.
Problem is, if we go down, next year is a hioliday with the parachute payments, noses in the trough etc. When he walks, we really will be in the mire!!

Anyone seen that advert with the little dog that quivers until he gets in the car and then shouts the odds at everybody? Well we Bolton fans are like that in reverse. When we are at home on the web we are so vocal in our condemnation and contempt of those in charge at the Reebok, but it gets us no where because no one at the club reads it and if they do they think we are an ineffectual minority. What happens when we are in full view of those we besmurch all week? Banners? cries of desention? vocal protests?...Nothing. Not a peep or a wimper not even after the final whistle when it can't affect the players or the game.We are a reflection of some players and the manager-all talk and no action.
Anybody agree?
Anyone seen that advert with the little dog that quivers until he gets in the car and then shouts the odds at everybody? Well we Bolton fans are like that in reverse. When we are at home on the web we are so vocal in our condemnation and contempt of those in charge at the Reebok, but it gets us no where because no one at the club reads it and if they do they think we are an ineffectual minority. What happens when we are in full view of those we besmurch all week? Banners? cries of desention? vocal protests?...Nothing. Not a peep or a wimper not even after the final whistle when it can't affect the players or the game.We are a reflection of some players and the manager-all talk and no action.

why is everyone saying what a good goal ,ronaldo s free kick was, any decent manager would have put @ defender on each post. [ sam would ] come on mr megson its not that difficult. [ IS IT ][/quote] Any good keeper would have saved it. Al Habsi's positioning was poor. He should have been covering that side of the goal so shouldn't be beaten by a shot from 30yards.

Dont think Al Habsi really expecting Steinsson to throw himself out of the wall.
I like this keeper, Jussi has looked very below par this season and we have a very good replacement.

The reason i asked the Bolton fans to look at the Dailymail website was to show how G Megson P Gartside, E Davies and the board have treated the Grand old club we all call Bolton Wanderers with no respect and showed no respect espeshially all the fans.
I don't think Megson,Gartside,Davi
es and the board know what respect is there interpretation of respect is can't be bothered what happens to the club of the fan's in other words as long as we get how'er cut screw the lot of you.

Al Habsi , Take a good look people , enjoy his performances before he goes in summer in the same taxi as Jussi. Never mind we will have Ian Walker for the Championship. As for Anelka being a good sale? , Well Gartside , looks like the pure greed you displayed in Jan will backfire on you and sadly BWFC big time when we go down. As for Miete he's been awfull for 18 months so let him rot in the reserves.
