Bevan shines as Hilton kick off in style

IT'S tight at the top of the Bolton Table Tennis League Premier Division with Hilton B and Burning Desire A on12 points and Ramsbottom A and Burning Desire B just one point behind.

Hilton started their campaign with a win over Wharton, in which they recovered from being 4-0 down to scrape home 5-4. They followed up with a 7-2 win at Little Lever B which featured three wins by Steve Bevan.

Burning Desire suffered a 5-4 loss at Hilton A, although their top player Paul Cicchelli was unbeaten. Kim Barnard trebled for Burning Desire B who won 7-2 at Heaton A, and all three Ramsbottom A players won two sets in their 6-3 win at Wharton.

Three wins by Bill Fairhurst and Kevan Orton, plus two by Geoff Rushton gave YMCA an 8-1 win over Tonge B, which elevates them to the top of Division One on 13 points.

One point behind are Little Lever C who scored an 8-1 win against their D team, with trebles by Paul Tatlock and Chris Sutcliffe.

Gareth Palmer, and Dave Holden scored three apiece for Nomads B who beat Hilton D 6-3, and there were trebles for Graham Young of Ramsbottom B, who scored a 6-3 win over Nomads A, and John Bradbury for Wingates, who won 5-4 at Ladybridge A.

Meadowbank top Division Two after a 5-4 win over Heaton E, which featured three wins by Paul Jackson and two by Paul Pover. Bolton News A share second spot with Heaton E after they scraped home 5-4 at Hilton H, thanks to three wins by Mike Heaton. Three wins by Tony Eardley and Garry Hilton helped Hilton G to an 8-1 win over their E team, and John Cartledge was unbeaten for Hilton F who beat Heaton C 6-3.

Hilton I have a three-point lead at the top of the Third Division after they beat Hilton K 8-1 with three wins by Brian Carter and Alan Entwistle. Bolton News B share second spot with Tonge C after they beat Irlam 6-3, with three wins by Phil Herd and Jack Berry.

Ladybridge C top Division Four by three points after a 7-2 win at Hilton L, which featured three wins by Robin Llewellyn.

Hilton N and Monton Bowling Club share second place after both scored 7-2 wins, the Hilton team beating newcomers Youth Express with three wins by Krishna Chauhan. Three wins by Dave Waite and two each by Dave Heaton and Keith Carter gave Monton their win over Brass. Martin Archer was unbeaten for Little Lever E who lost 6-3 at Hilton M, as was Elliot France for the Lads Club who lost at Heaton G by the same score.

TOP TEN Premier Division : 6 P Cicchelli; 5 K Barnard.

Division One: 6 G Palmer, K Orton.

Division Two: 6 M Heaton, P Jackson.

Division Three: 6 B Carter; 5 J Riley, P Herd, S Hall; 4 R Caswell, T Mason.
