BSF Summer Tennis League
ELLESMERE A pulled off the biggest shock of the new season with a stunning 7-2 win for Ellesmere A over last year s Premier Division runners-up South College A.
Ellesmere's third couple Nixon and Cain were in sparkling form, winning all three sets, including a 6-4 win over the College's top couple Hinnighan and Gartside.
A similar 7-2 win saw last year's third-placed Division One team, Lostock A, taken apart by an in-form Hawkshaw A, who were last year's Division Two runners-up.
Given the youthful team which newly promoted Leigh CCA turned out, and considering that they played their first match against a vastly experienced Longsight Meths A team, one would have considered the upstarts were in for a tennis lesson.
Instead, the precocious Leigh team got stuck into their visitors and trounced them 8-1 to go straight to the top of Division Two.
Leigh's Aaron Sudell, returning after suspension, played brilliantly and won all three sets with his partner David Hawkes and yielding only six games all evening.
David Lloyd (Bolton) A, after an indifferent Division Two season last year, started well by topping their division thanks to a 7-2 win over their second team. Their opponents are a new team whose entry into Men's League tennis was arranged after South College C pulled their team out right at the start of the season.
Two teams who were promoted from Division Three last year met in their first Division Two match. Chorley A played a blinder and move into second place following a competent 6-3 win over a decent Longsight Meth's B team.
Of the four Markland Hill teams in the competition, only Markland Hill C could win a match.
In a fine 7-2 defeat of Holcombe Brook SC B, they now share Division Four top place in a three-way tie.
Relegation from Division Four has not proved easy for Walkers who visited Winton SC, who moved up from Division Five, and in spite of putting up a valiant struggle, they lost 6-3.
Last year, Lostock D played all season without losing a match in Division Seven and started life in Division Six with a good win over an out of form Guildhall, who were relegated from Division Five.
Led by captain David Bedford, the Lostock team took advantage of playing at home and got their season off to a best possible start by winning 6-3.
Second-placed Walmer B visited neighbours Holcombe Brook SC C for the derby match, and won in a tense but sporting encounter.
Astley & Tyldesley came down just spoiling for a fight and poor old Meadow Hill stood in their way in the opening fixture of the season.
The Astley & Tyldesley visitors had two couples who won all three and their final score of 7-2 sets a marker for the other Division Seven teams for this season.
Division Eight's Holcombe Brook SC D are on fire having posted the best win of the week with an 8-1 win at Bradshaw C The result does not reflect the closeness of the scores; in fact, if Bradshaw had avoided losing two sets to Love there were four other sets which were separated by a single service break.
