A convincing second-half display helped Hindsford to a comfortable 5-1 victory at home to Lytham Town in the first round of the Lancashire Amateur Shield.

Andrew Grainger put the Manchester League Premier Division champions in front with a 25-yard volley, but their West Lancashire League Division One opponents were given a way back into the tie following a Lewis Price own goal.

After going into the break on level terms, Paul Dixon edged Barry Massey’s side back in front with a strike from the edge of the box and they never looked back.

Ben Merredith added a third goal from a free-kick before a late double from substitute Jack Valentine on his return from injury.

The victory set up a second round tie against West Lancs Premier side Eagley, who lie second from bottom in their league.

Atherton Town also cruised through to the second round after a thumping 7-0 win against Todmorden Borough.

The West Lancs Division Two outfit handed Atherton the opener through an own goal and Shaun Lynch’s Manchester Premier side were 3-0 up by half time following two goals from Gary Shaw.

Shaw’s fellow forwards Nick Eastham (two) and Ryan Corbett got in on the act after the break before right-back Lee Fitzmartin rounded off the scoring with what Lynch described as “the goal of the game”.

Atherton’s reward is a second-round tie at Manchester Premier rivals Manchester Gregorians.

Pennington celebrated their return to cup football with a 3-2 victory at Cheshire League Division One side Daten.

Goals from Danny Warburton and Carl Giles put Pennington on level terms going into the closing stages before Sam Rowlands popped up with a winner that set up a home tie against West Lancs Division One side Poulton in the next round.

Elsewhere, Manchester League sides Breightmet United and Leigh Athletic disappointingly both lost out on penalties to West Lancashire League rivals Tempest United and Stoneclough, respectively.
