CMB earned a home tie in the third round of the Lancashire Amateur Shield after edging out the Manchester League’s Prestwich Heys on penalties.

The match ended 4-4 after Matthew Carr bagged a brace and Paul Hallows and Callum Yearsley scored.

And goalkeeper Danny Vickers stepped up to the plate in the shootout, saving Heys’ final penalty as the Lostock side won the spot-kick contest 4-2.

“It was one of our worst performances of the season against one of the best sides we’ve played,” said manager Phil Roberts.

“But we showed great spirit again – the cup competitions are all about getting into the next round.”

Tempest United joined CMB in the last 16 after beating Hurst Green in a seven-goal thriller.

Matty Carter (two) and Sean Rothwell helped put Tempest 3-1 up by the break before Pete Lancaster added a fourth.

Hurst Green pulled one back late in the game to set up a nervy final 10 minutes, but Tempest held on to make it into the third round for the first time in eight years.

They will now take on Manchester Gregorians for a place in the quarter-finals.

Stoneclough paid the price for a missed spot-kick as they were beaten 4-2 by Vickerstown.

They were trailing by just one goal when Dean Mason had a penalty saved and Vickerstown doubled their advantage before Stuart Parkinson finally pulled one back.

But the visitors stretched their lead to 4-1 before Callum Hughes scored a consolation for Stoneclough.

In Division One, 10-man Turton moved into third place in the table after beating second-placed Fulwood Amateurs 2-1.

Tom Morgan opened the scoring for Neil Johnson’s side after the break but Fulwood equalised against the run of play and Matt Eckersley was sent off for disputing an offside decision in the build-up to the goal.

Turton did not give up though and Morgan tapped in the winner.

Johnson said: “We showed tremendous character and the players worked so hard to get what was a very important win.”

Tom Aspin rounded the keeper to score for Bolton County in a 2-1 defeat to Burscough Richmond.

Manager Mark Ormrod was upbeat despite losing a third consecutive match by a single goal.

He said: “There were no disappointed players after the game, we had a chat about how it went.

“We have got talented players and a good shape.”
