EAGLEY boss Simon Whaley wants his players to take a cup final mindset into Saturday’s match against the Premier Division’s bottom side Hesketh Bank.

The former Bury, Preston and Norwich midfielder bagged his first point as manager of the Dunscar side in a 3-3 draw with Garstang at the weekend.

And he believes the draw is something they can build on.

“It is a start and I will be stressing to the players now that the next game is like a cup final,” said Whaley, with second-bottom Eagley now six points off safety. “It was a game of two halves as in the first half we created five or six chances which we should have scored but went in 2-0 down.

“In the second half we went out all guns blazing and grabbed two goals and then went ahead but a lapse in concentration let them grab a point.”

Jordan Cover scored twice and Jack Horan was also on target.

In Division Two, Ladybridge showed their promotion credentials by hitting table toppers Leyland United for six.

Dave Walker’s side started the match with two games in hand and four points behind their rivals.

The Tempest Road outfit took the game to them from the off and were rewarded when Sam Parkinson’s blocked shot fell to Matty Woods, who hit an unstoppable 25-yard half volley into the roof of the net.

Parkinson raced clear to finish off their second on 20 minutes, and Woods added the third from the spot 10 minutes before the break, after a Leyland defender was sent off for bringing down Danny Edmondson in the box.

Ross Ellison headed home from a corner on 47 minutes before Edmondson made it 5-0 and Harry Brazil rounded off the scoring with 20 minutes still to play.

Walker said: “We started very well and never let them into the game, we played some excellent football throughout the game and from the first kick the result was never in doubt.”

Division One side Turton also scored six at Lytham Town.

Damien Keegan opened the scoring with a 30-yard shot and they doubled their lead before the break when Dave Hanlon scored from a header.

Turton’s management team told the players to press higher up the pitch and it paid off with Hanlon bagging his second then Kieron Sisson helped himself to a brace and Dom Farrimond rounded off the scoring in the dying minutes.

Joint manager Neil Hart said: “It was another pleasing performance on Saturday. We had a few players missing, which shows the strength of the squad.

“Another pleasing aspect was that we were able to give Harry Wood from our under-17s his first-team debut.”

At the other end of the table, Bolton County went down 2-0 to Mill Hill St Peters.

Meanwhile, Will Archer equalised for CMB against Barrow Wanderers, but they went down 2-1 after conceding 30-yard wonder-strike with 10 minutes to go.

Stoneclough are off the bottom of Division Two after Jon Smalley’s goal gave them a 1-0 win against Walney Island.
