BOLTON County pulled off an impressive scalp in the Lancashire Amateur Shield second round by defeating Askam United 1-0.

Mark Ormrod's side knew it was going to be a tough task against a team one league above them.

However, the Helsby brothers were the heroes for County with Tom grabbing the only goal while with time running out goalkeeper Charlie made a crucial save at the death to wrap up the win.

The Darcy Lever side are going strong in the West Lancashire League Division Two as they sit in sixth spot – seven points off the leaders.

Manager Ormrod said: "It was a very even match and we created some wonderful chances.

"Askam's keeper pulled off two great saves but we won a free-kick and then Tom Helsby knocked it in.

"Every time we went forward we looked dangerous.

"They had a player sent-off for a second yellow card and then we put them under a lot of pressure.

"But Tom also went off for picking up a second yellow.

"Just before the end, they had a corner and Charlie Helsby made a point-blank save to win the game."

Ormrod believes the team are producing some positive performances recently and they have high hopes for the future.

He said: "We have had a few tough seasons but we have a fantastic committee.

"But we have set out a plan for this year and we don't want to over-stretch ourselves but we will be bringing back the reserves and U18s next year.

"I went to see one of our U15s sides on Saturday and some of the players have been there for a long time and that has been our strength having players who stick around such as the Liam Shorts and Josh Evans of this world.

"They have shown a lot of loyalty and we like to have a group of core committed players and this is a four year plan to have the U15s coming through."

Elsewhere, Division Two rivals CMB moved closer to repeating their heroics of reaching the final last season by beating Furness Cavaliers 2-1.

Phil Roberts' side were caught on the counter-attack on the hour-mark when Nick Allen turned the ball into his own net.

CMB put Furness under pressure and it paid off when Matty Carr slotted home a penalty on 75 minutes.

Then Will Archer scored the winner with five minutes left after a fine strike from the left.

Meanwhile, an under-strength Ladybridge side defeated Lytham 3-2 to progress in the shield.

Ladybridge raced into a two-goal lead in the first half with goals from Man of the match Jordan Coop and Sam Parkinson.

The second half Lytham put up more of a fight but Ladybridge looked well in control until an error in possession gifted the hosts an equaliser.

Ladybridge continue to pressure the Lytham goal and missed a number of opportunities before good work on the wing from Gary Whiteside resulted in Mike McGinlay securing the win in the dying moments.

Joining them in the last 16 of the competition will be Bolton rivals Turton and Tempest.

Kieron Sisson was at the double for Turton in the first half were the highlights of a 2-1 win against Wythenshawe Amateurs.

Tempest United were celebrating a 4-2 win on penalties at Wyre Villa after a 0-0 stalemate in normal time.

On the league front, Eagley suffered a 6-3 defeat to Hesketh Bank with Nick Heyes, Si Whaley and Joe O'Keefe on target.
