WANDERERS under-18s coach David Lee was annoyed with the match officials after a dubious offside goal consigned his team to a 2-1 defeat at Barnsley on Saturday.

The young Whites went into the U18 Professional Development League 2 clash looking to build on a first point since November following a goalless home draw against Sheffield Wednesday.

And they put in a display deserving of another share of the spoils across the Pennines.

After falling behind midway through the first half, Lee's side drew level when Max Allen's cross from the left was converted by Matthew Marsh from eight yards.

They pushed for a winner but conceded late on to what Lee described as a 'very obvious offside'.

Lee told The Bolton News: "The performance was excellent with some very good patterns of dominating play.

"Overall there were some pleasing performances, with the players showing a high technical game mixed with a desire to work hard.

"It was just very disappointing to be beaten by a refereeing mistake.

"Barnsley scored from a corner after 20 minutes but we responded very well and created some good chances.

"We scored through Marsh, after excellent wide attacking play down the left wing from Allen.

"We continued to dominate the game, though conceded a late goal to a very obvious offside.

"It was disappointing that the officials discarded our claims for it to be ruled out."

The u18s are back on home soil on Saturday when they host Crewe Alexandra at the Eddie Davies Academy.
