WE made our weary ways to the Macron for the last home match of this wretched season.

There was a definite air of ‘let’s get it over with’ in the Fanzone as the bookies wrote us off again. However, local Leigh lass Zoe Unsworth put in what turned out to be the first of many good performances of the day.

Injuries restricted Jimmy Phillips’ team selection but it was good to see Tyler Garratt given a first start after coming on as sub last week.

Josh Vela mysteriously disappeared from the team after being announced as a starter.

We more than held our own as Ben Amos had very little to do, although Robert Snodgrass did rattle the bar with a great free kick just before half time.

In the second half, we upped our game and I was millimetres off collecting £26 for the first goal minutes before Stephen Dobbie popped up with the winner.

Chuba Akpom hit the bar when it was easier to score but we held on for a surprise and deserved victory.

Mark Davies was back to his best, creating several chances. George Newell came on for his debut and let’s hope he makes his dad, Mike, proud of him.

Jimmy Phillips had said there had been no honour this season to justify the traditional players’ and families’ lap of honour at the end of the last home match.

It’s hard to disagree with him but there was a missed opportunity as the fans could have done the lap of honour with the players watching.

Seriously though we need to rebuild the spirit between the fans and the players as we go through these difficult times. I’m glad that the BWSA are having a player-of-the-year event as there have been a few rays of hope in an otherwise dark season.

Let’s not forget that we did win some silverware when the under-21s beat Manchester City in the Manchester FA Senior Cup back in August. Several promising youngsters have emerged this season despite being chucked in at the deep end.

Hope springs eternal.

Everything is up in the air as the rebuilding starts.

Nobody knows who will be at the Macron to kick off the new season in August.

We need to give Dean Holdsworth and Ken Anderson the chance to lead us on to better times. Now let’s get on with it.
