BREIGHTMET completed a difficult season on a high note, with a 4-0 stroll at home to Hollinwood.

The Manchester League Division One's basement side arrived at Moss Park two players short and were put to the sword in the first half as Breightmet hit all four of their goals before the break.

Aiden McNamara netted twice and with Jake Pilling completing a fine team move and Osman Karakan hitting the goal of the game from outside the box, Breightmet were four goals to the good by the time the sides turned around.

In their final game of the season, and with the visitors up to full strength for the last half-hour Breightmet could not add to the score in the second half. However, coach Simon Wilcox – who stepped down as manager a year ago but rejoined the coaching team in mid-season – was pleased with the impressive finale to an ultimately disappointing campaign.

"Hollinwood are notorious for not being able to raise a full team or for turning up late," he said. "And the ref didn't want to wait around for them so they started with nine, and a few of those were unfamiliar to me from the first game – they went for it though, they still played two up front.

"We did what we had to do in the first half, although we could have been six, seven or even eight up by half time.

"We got a bit greedy in the second half, we didn't pass it well enough on the whole and it was more like a training match, we never got the intensity going again. It was a decent enough game once they got to full strength, if that is anything like the side they put out next season they won't be anywhere near the bottom."

As for Breightmet's own chances of success next season, Wilcox admits to a sense of envy at what rivals have achieved while they languish in 10th, but he is optimistic that they can perform better and more consistently next time around.

"I think we all see this season as a disappointment," he said. "We believe we can beat anyone in this league on our day, but then so do most teams.

"We have a good blend of youth and experience in our squad, we started strongly but when a few injuries came we hit a really bad spell and couldn't buy a win. I suppose it's a bit of a transitional period and we did put a few good results together at the end.

"We believe we can push on though, when we see the sides at the top we believe we are as good, if not better, but the table doesn't lie."
