CHARLTON Athletic mopped up their managerial mess yesterday, which could have a knock-on effect for Wanderers.

The South Londoners confirmed Russell Slade as their new boss, over-looking Nigel Adkins in the process.

Adkins has been interviewed by both clubs but despite impressing Charlton CEO Katrien Meire in their discussions, former Cardiff City chief Slade was handed the task of taking the club back into the Championship on what is likely to be one of the division’s best playing budgets.

Since leaving Sheffield United on May 12, Adkins has been strongly linked with Wanderers.

He has worked previously with Ken Anderson and has three League One promotions on his CV with Southampton, once, and Scunthorpe United, twice.

Steve Cotterill is another man with proven promotion pedigree who is being seriously considered and would be available without compensation.

He has also worked with John Pelling, who is awaiting his role as financial director to be announced by the club, whilst at Bristol City.

Both men have been brought up to speed with the current financial position of the club during the interview and what will be required to emerge from the transfer embargo.

It is understood a number of potential transfer targets have also been discussed with a view to the new season.
