WHEN major tournaments go to the final round of group matches it presents a huge logistical problem for the average at-home TV viewer.

It is all well and good if you are in a bar, surrounded by flat screen TVs, your keen senses dulled with alcohol.

But if you are flicking back and forth from BBC One to BBC Four in the vain hope of catching a live goal it can be a risky business.

Thankfully the main channel had picked the excitable Jonathan Pearce for commentary, so if France or Switzerland got anywhere near goal I could hear him from the other channel.

Danny Murphy’s dulcet Scouse tones were used to counteract Pearce’s high-decibel chatter, like a commentary yin and yang.

Back in the studio Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry and Rio Ferdinand debated the relative merits of Harry Kane, before giving a brief mention to France striker Antoine Griezmann; they all agreed he was pretty good.

Ferdinand made up a new word, describing Wales defender Ashley Williams as a “cajweller” which I can only assume is someone who persuades you to buy bracelets and stuff.

Otherwise it was all very vanilla.

Over in the backwaters of BBC4 – perhaps the most highbrow channel available on modern satellite cable television – Dion Dublin and Trevor Sinclair were discussing Romania’s clash with Albania... probably.

Simon Brotherton got the match itself, flanked by Mark Lawrenson who does a good impression of a co-commentator who doesn’t want to be there at the very best of times.

I turned over at 15 minutes half-expecting Lawrenson to be listing the reasons he was behind the Brexit.

From there, however, life started to become more difficult. By watching some of the Albania game I missed Paul Pogba hit the bar. By flicking to the other side I didn’t see Lenjani miss an open goal and a glorious chance for Albania to score their first goal of the competition.

I did manage to catch Pearce make the obligatory mention that Blerim Dzemaili used to play for Wanderers, so the night was not a complete loss, but for the rest of this round of games I’m opting for a second television in the front room. Or maybe nipping down to the local?
