FOR a generation of Wanderers fans, this season will largely be a journey into the unknown.

Not since 1993 have the Whites set foot in the third tier, but awaiting them in League One are some old foes with old scores to settle.

Bury, Oldham and Rochdale have local pride at stake but Phil Parkinson’s summer move across the Pennines will also add some extra spice to the games against Bradford City.

Phil Brown’s Southend United should be a lively opponent, likewise Neil Cox’s newcomers AFC Wimbledon – whose Kingsmeadow ground is one of nine stadia at which Wanderers have never played a league game.

Ahead of the fixtures coming out on Wednesday morning at 9am, here is a look at what Whites fans can expect from their trips this season.

AFC WIMBLEDON

Ground: Kingsmeadow

Capacity: 4,850

Usual away allocation: 600-700

Round trip: 472

Last visit: Wanderers have never visited the home of the phoenix club but last visited the old incarnation of the Dons in December 2000, when a certain Dean Holdsworth scored the only goal of the game against his former club.

Good memories: Holdsworth’s homecoming aside, the Whites have only won once more at Wimbledon – Tony Philliskirk’s solitary goal was not enough to overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit in the League Cup in 1992.

Bad memories: The old Dons pummelled Wanderers 4-0 at Plough Lane en route to promotion from Division Three in 1984.

BRADFORD CITY

Ground: Valley Parade

Capacity: 25,136

Usual away allocation: 1,840

Round trip: 94

Last visit: Arnar Gunnlaugsson scored Wanderers’ 6,000th league goal in a 2-2 draw in their last visit to Bradford. Nathan Blake grabbed the other.

Good memories: Fans were treated to an eight-goal thriller at Bradford in September 1991. Julian Darby scored twice, with Mark Patterson and David Reeves also netting in a memorable 4-4 draw.

Bad memories: Wanderers could not win away in 1984, and Tony Caldwell’s effort could not prevent a festive defeat for John McGovern’s men.

BRISTOL ROVERS

Ground: Memorial Stadium

Capacity: 12,011

Usual away allocation: 1,100

Miles: 362

Last visit: Tony Philliskirk scored the last time Wanderers faced the nomadic Rovers in January 1990, although that was at the old Twerton Park. The game finished 1-1.

Good memories: Alan Waldron netted a winner at Rovers for Ian Greaves’ side en route to the Second Division title at Eastville in November, 1977.

Bad memories: Phil Neal’s side had gone well and truly off the boil in Division Three when they crashed 2-0 at Twerton Park in January 1989.

BURY

Ground: Gigg Lane

Capacity: 11,640

Usual away allocation: Around 2,000

Round trip: 31

Last visit: Wanderers were beaten 2-1 as Dean West and Chris Swailes scored for the Shakers in April, 1999. Neil Cox grabbed one back for Colin Todd’s play-off chasers but Dean Kiely produced a string of fine saves to protect the points.

Good memories: Goals from Owen Coyle and former Shaker John McGinlay earned safe passage to the second round of the League Cup at Gigg in 1993.

Bad memories: Plenty to pick from for the Whites – but a failure to beat their local rivals in April 1987 all-but ensured a play-off to keep their place in Division Three. And we know how that went...

CHARLTON ATHLETIC

Ground: The Valley

Capacity: 27,111

Usual away allocation: Up to 3,000

Round trip: 471

Last visit: Emile Heskey and Josh Vela rescued a point after Ademola Lookman’s two early strikes spelled bad news for Neil Lennon’s side.

Good memories: Youri Djorkaeff’s brilliant overhead kick to salvage a point for Wanderers at The Valley in 2003. Magnifique.

Bad memories: Relegations have been commonplace at Charlton, none more depressing than a 4-1 defeat in 1983. Ian Moores scored the consolation.

CHESTERFIELD

Ground: Proact Stadium

Capacity: 10,400

Usual away allocation: 2,112, although additional seating has been made available in the past.

Round trip: 132

Last visit: Wanderers have never been to Chesterfield’s new home. Their last trip to the decrepit Psaltergate was for an FA Cup tie in 1990.  The Whites won 4-3.

Good memories: Stuart Lee snatched the winner as Jimmy Armfield’s side showed the mettle which would help them claim the Division Three title in 1972/73.

Bad memories: A poor season in 1986 ended on a low note as Wanderers were spanked 3-0 at Psalter Gate on the final day.

COVENTRY CITY

Ground: Ricoh Arena

Capacity: 32,500

Usual away allocation: Around 3,000

Round trip: 235

Last visit: Wanderers have never played at the Ricoh Arena but were fairly regular visitors to Highfield Road. The last occasion was August 1997 – Nathan Blake scored twice in a 2-2 draw.

Good memories: The Whites had a dreadful record at Highfield Road. Alan Stubbs scored twice in March 1996 to seal one of only two wins at the ground in 10 attempts.

FLEETWOOD TOWN

Ground: Highbury

Capacity: 5,311

Usual away allocation: 831

Round trip: 78

Good memories: Another friendly, this time in 1981. Wanderers eased themselves into pre-season with a 6-1 win on the seaside.

Bad memories: The Whites are yet to make any bad memories on that part of the Fylde Coast.

GILLINGHAM

Ground: Priestfield

Capacity: 11,582

MK DONS

Ground: Stadium:MK

Capacity: 30,500

Usual away allocation: 3,000 but can be trebled on demand.

Round trip: 337

Last visit: A 1-0 defeat at the start of last season, Daniel Powell scored the winning goal for Karl Robinson’s side.

Good memories: The Whites actually played well on their only trip to Stadium:MK to date.

Bad memories: Despite dominating the game, Neil Lennon’s men were left completely empty-handed after some woeful finishing.

Usual away allocation: Up to 4,000.

Round trip: 453

Good memories: Ex-Lions striker John McGinlay raided his old club with a winner for Bruce Rioch’s side in March, 1995.

Bad memories: Chris Eagles’ missed penalty proved costly for Owen Coyle, who was sacked soon after a 2-1 defeat in October, 2012.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN

Ground: Sixfields Stadium

Capacity: 7,653

Usual away allocation: 800

Round trip: 297

Last visit: Wanderers have never played at Sixfields. Their last game at the County Ground finished in a 2-0 win in February, 1990, with Julian Darby and Steve Thompson on the scoresheet.

Ground: Boundary Park

Capacity: 13,500

Usual away allocation: 1,600

Round trip: 44

Last visit: A 2005 televised FA Cup clash in the mud, won by a single goal from young Portuguese striker Ricardo Vaz Te.

Good memories: Ralph Wright and Ronnie Phillips earned Wanderers an early win en route to the Division Three title in 1973.

Bad memories: After beating Everton, Arsenal and Aston Villa in the FA Cup run of 1994, Mark Patterson’s mistake gifted Darren Beckford a winner to end Wembley hopes for the Whites.

OXFORD UNITED

Ground: Kassam Stadium

Capacity: 12,500

Usual away allocation: Up to 5,000.

Round trip: 356

Last visit: Wanderers have never been to the Kassam, which was opened in 2001, but drew 0-0 on their last game at the Manor Ground in April, 1999. Firoz Kassam had just taken over at Oxford but Steve Banks’ brilliant debut kept the scores level.

Good memories: Tony Kelly and Alan Thompson netted in a festive win at the Manor Ground in December, 1993.

Good memories: Free-scoring Wanderers were coasting towards the title in 1997. They rattled four past Vale – Per Frandsen, Chris Fairclough and Nathan Blake adding to a Lee Glover own goal.

Bad memories: Vale were destined for promotion in 1989 when they beat Phil Neal’s Whites 2-1 early in the season. Nicky Brookman scored the consolation.

ROCHDALE

Ground: Spotland

Capacity: 10,249

Usual away allocation: 1,500 to 3,650

SCUNTHORPE UNITED

Ground: Glanford Park

Capacity: 9,183

Usual away allocation: 1,650

Round trip: 192

Last visit: Trevor Morgan scored in a 1-1 draw in Division Four the last time Wanderers went to Scunthorpe in 1987 – but that was the final season at the old Showground.

Good memories: Starting their defence of the FA Cup, Nat Lofthouse scored twice for the Whites in a 2-0 win over Scunthorpe in 1959.

Bad memories: Wanderers’ only defeat at Scunthorpe came early in the 1983/84 season, a week after Tony Caldwell had banged five goals against Walsall.

Bad memories: Wanderers went out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle in 1963 at Bramall Lane – but the game had taken an incredible 13 attempts to go ahead because of poor weather.

SHREWSBURY TOWN

Ground: The Greenhous Meadow

Capacity: 9,875

Usual away allocation: 1,800

Round trip: 191

Last visit: Wanderers have never played a league game at the New Meadow but Sanmi Odelusi did score twice in a 3-1 victory in the League Cup in 2013. Rob Hall also got on the scoresheet, Aaron Wildig grabbing the consolation.

Good memories: The old Gay Meadow provided the backdrop for the first game of the 1990/91 campaign, won by a single Stuart Storer goal.

Round trip: 183

Last visit: Club record £8million man Nicolas Anelka scored his first Bolton goal in a 3-1 League Cup win at Walsall in September, 2006. Ivan Campo and Kevin Nolan also netted.

Good memories: Few and far between. Wanderers have only taken two league points from the Bescot, the last being in October, 1989, when Julian Darby got on the scoresheet in Division Three.

Bad memories: Pride stung by the 8-1 thrashing dished out earlier in the season, Saddlers boss Alan Buckley ensured Wanderers had no luxuries in their visit to the Bescot, giving them deflated balls for the warm-up. It worked, and Walsall won 1-0.
