STEVE Barlow scored twice as Tempest United broke their West Lancashire League Premier Division duck on Saturday.

Tempest notched their first win since promotion to the top-flight with a 3-2 home triumph against Lostock St Gerards.

And assistant manager Gary Westhead said it was a deserved victory that could even have been by a bigger margin.

"We played well on Saturday," said Westhead. "We had good chances in the second half to make the scoreline better but we will take the win which is our first in the league.

"There are no easy games in this division and we are finding that out.

"It is taking us time to adapt because it is a lot tougher than last season.

"But we have a good squad of lads.

"On Saturday we took the lead when Steve Barlow volleyed home a rebound after Nathan Monson's shot had been saved but then sloppy defending let Lostock equalise.

"We went 2-1 up through one of the most bizarre goals I have ever seen.

"(Jack) Burkey when to chip their tall keeper from 30 yards, miss-hit it and it ended up going under and not over the keeper.

"We made it 3-1 when Steve tapped home his second but we missed a few after that – 5-1 would not have flattered us."

It was not all joy for local teams in the top flight at the weekend.

Turton lost 2-1 at home to Fulwood Amateurs despite taking the lead through Paul Bridge, while Eagley were beaten 7-0 at Coppull United as their poor start on the road continued.

In Division One, Steve Ward's goal was enough for Stoneclough to win 1-0 at Askam United.

Ladybridge went down 5-0 at home to Burscough Richmond while CMB had no game.
