IT was a relief to get back to the football after the seismic events of the past week, when we all became financial experts in an attempt to understand just how bad things got in June 2015 and what our chances for the future are.

The more pressing problem was how was Phil Parkinson going to cover the right-back position with Lawrie Wilson and Lewis Buxton both on the long-term injury list.

The answer was to go with wing-backs in a 3-5-2 formation.

Walsall hadn’t read the script and Erhun Oztumer stunned everybody with an absolute beauty in the second minute.

At that moment, we thought we had blown not only this match but the season but when the going gets tough, the tough get going.

Gary Madine took another battering but got us level, heading in Captain Marvel Jay Spearing’s corner.

Captain Marvel then forced an own goal with a great low cross before Liam 'Ya Ya' Trotter unleashed a rocket – something as rare as hen’s teeth.

Chris Long came on and scored a cracker to put the icing on the cake.

With our first win in 2017, this match showed we are in with a shout of automatic promotion.

We didn’t play that well – we have played better and lost before.

But we now look to have goals in the team. We have players to come off the bench and make a difference.

At Thursday’s BWSA meeting, we confirmed we have a genuine, hard-working management team dedicated to the cause.

So, let’s get behind the whole squad and try to achieve something not far short of a miracle in our current circumstances – automatic promotion.

Off the field, we need unity. United we stand, divided we fall.

It is not the time to be in the Anderson camp or the Holdsworth camp – everybody needs

to be in the BWFC camp.

No one can be in any doubt of the size of the financial challenge we face.

Our financial problems were never going to be solved overnight, despite Eddie Davies’ fantastic gesture to wipe out most of the debts.

The problem is the ongoing financial model is still racking up big losses. This will take time to sort out.

What we need is strong leadership from the top to take the necessary decisions to make our club financially viable again, no matter how unpopular those decisions are.
