VICTORY at second-placed Fleetwood has put automatic promotion back into Wanderers’ hands.

After moving to within a point of their hosts, with a game in hand, Phil Parkinson admitted the result handed his team a major psychological boost.

The Whites travel to Gillingham tomorrow night hoping to maintain their momentum.

“It’s game on now,” the manager said. “We knew that if we lost that game the gap would have been increased. It wouldn’t have been over – but this gives us such a boost to get us going again.

“I thought we improved from the Bristol Rovers game against Wimbledon, and we have been searching for that way of playing again. We changed the system because of the injuries but we are getting there and we have to go again.”

Gillingham did Wanderers a favour on Saturday as three Josh Wright penalties sank Scunthorpe United, dropping the long-time League One leaders into fifth spot.

Parkinson is keen to keep his players motivated in what he believes could be a tricky trip.

“I went to see Gillingham the other week and they have got some really dangerous players,” he said. “You have got to be really up for the game.

“You can spend ages watching the games back but often it’s just about motivation. Our motivation at Fleetwood was a different class.

“We said before the Fleetwood game that a 12-game season starts now, and that was a good start.”

Meanwhile, Parkinson gave a hat-full of praise to Filipe Morais after his hat-trick of assists at Fleetwood.

The winger, released by Bradford City in January, has been a hit since joining his former Valley Parade boss at the Macron.

Morais laid on goals for David Wheater, Mark Beevers and Adam Le Fondre.

“He was up against a good player in Amari’i Bell, who for me is one of the best wing-backs in this division, but Fil had him on toast – he really did,” Parkinson said.

“You always thought he was going to produce something and his set piece delivery was excellent. In open play he was very, very good.”

The last Wanderers player to grab three assists in the same game was Liam Feeney in a 4-3 home defeat against Watford in February 2015.

Morais has created five goals since signing for the Whites from a right wing-back role and Parkinson reckons he could have a major say in the season run-in for the Whites.

“I know what Fil can do and if you get the ball to him early enough and in wide positions then he’s a very dangerous customer,” he said.
