SOMEONE could write their name in Wanderers folklore on Sunday afternoon.

Every Bolton promotion tale has a hero, a John McGinlay, a Fabian De Freitas, a Nathan Blake or a Gudni Bergsson. But who will step forward against Peterborough United and ensure their exploits are talked about at the Macron for years to come?

It need not be a goal-scorer. In fact, Wanderers’ season has been built upon a solid defensive base and a blistering work-rate rather than a copious number of goals.

David Wheater and Mark Beevers have been frighteningly consistent. Fans have identified with their no-nonsense approach and so long as the Whites avoid shipping three goals against Posh, they will set a new club record for goals conceded in a 46-game season.

The goalkeeper spot has been fiercely contested. Mark Howard and Ben Alnwick have both held the number one spot at different stages of the season but Howard recently edged ahead on clean sheets, keeping his 12th in 28 appearances at Port Vale.

Dorian Dervite looked destined to leave the Macron before returning to the team in late February at Sheffield United, since then he has gone from strength to strength. Looking well at home on the right side of a three-man defence, the former Charlton man deserves massive credit for the way he has finished the season.

Phil Parkinson knew what Filipe Morais could do when he brought the free agent to Wanderers in January having worked with him at Bradford. Surely the Whites boss cannot have imagined the impact he would have at his new club.

He has registered an incredible 13 assists and two goals in 20 appearances. As they say in these parts – The Postman has delivered.

Andy Taylor has been a hugely reliable presence on the left, providing consistent delivery and great organisation. As someone who has played all of his football in the top two tiers, his class has shone through in no uncertain terms.

Jay Spearing forged a bond with the Whites fans from the moment he walked through the door a few years ago. It shows no signs of weakening.

The heartbeat of the midfield, Anfield graduate Spearing tends to set the tempo and will be a key man when the pressure is on against Peterborough.

Derik Osede has matured terrifically this season, learning the holding midfield role, and Jem Karacan showed promise with an all-action performance at Port Vale.

Josh Vela was picked out early on by Parkinson as a player who would be integral to his plan, as so it has proved. ‘One of our own,’ the Salfordian has shown an eye for goal and a tireless work ethic.

Darren Pratley suffered a broken leg on the opening day of the season but shocked everyone by dropping himself in un-announced to inspire a win at Fleetwood. One of Wanderers’ unsung heroes – could he get a defining moment against Posh?

Like Pratley, Gary Madine has had to win over some of his doubters. His 10 goals have certainly helped, as did last week’s brave display with an injured shoulder at Vale. When Madine is on his game there are few defenders at this level who can cope with his physicality.

Adam Le Fondre is a different animal. His work-rate and eye for goal has attracted favourable comparisons with Wanderers legend McGinlay - so the scene is set for him to take the mantle of match-winner on a day like Sunday.

Or does Bolton’s inspiration come from a wildcard; a Conor Wilkinson, Viv Solomon-Otabor, Tom Thorpe, Liam Trotter or Chris Long? At 1.45pm on Sunday, we’ll find out.
