WANDERERS’ Under-23s missed out on a chance to extend their lead at the top of the table, slipping to a rare defeat at Charlton Athletic.

Missing leading scorer Connor Hall, who stayed behind with the first team at Lostock, the young Whites were beaten 3-0 with goals from Louis-Michel Yamfam, Joshua Umera and Brendan Sarpong-Wriedu.

Wolves trialist Jordan Allan started up front for Bolton, going close with an early effort put just past the post.

Ryan White also had a good chance to open the scoring from close range, also squeezing his effort narrowly wide.

Charlton took the lead against the run of play. James Aspinall had made a good save to block Kenneth Yao’s effort one-on-one, but when the Addicks kept the pressure on, Yamfam found the bottom corner with a clinical shot from just outside the penalty box.

Wanderers continued to make chances but could not find a way of getting back on level terms. Dennis Politic went closest, putting a shot wide unmarked from eight yards out.

The home side looked more dangerous after the break and after Yamfam had whistled one long-range drive just wide, Aspinall came to his side’s rescue again to push away a header from Yao.

His resolve was broken moments later as some poor marking at the corner allowed Umerah to volley home from close range.

Aspinall continued to make saves into the final stages to keep the score-line down – but could nto prevent substitute Sarpong-Wiredu scooting through in the final minute to slot a third for the Londoners.

Wanderers’ lead at the top of the Professional Development League North is now three points from Sheffield Wednesday in second and six clear of Hull City in third.

David Lee’s side are next in action at home to Colchester United on Monday night at Leyland.
