WANDERERS’ survival hopes took a mauling as Wolves coasted to the Championship title in style at the Macron Stadium.

Goals from Barry Douglas, Benik Afobe, Diogo Jota and Conor Coady handed Phil Parkinson his heaviest defeat at Bolton boss.

And results elsewhere mean that should Barnsley beat Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, Wanderers could mathematically be relegated with a defeat at Burton Albion next weekend.

Parkinson’s side have two games to save their skins but will need to pick themselves up after a thoroughly demoralising afternoon against the Premier League bound Wolves.

After a bright opening 15 minutes where chances fell to both Mark Beevers and Darren Pratley, Wanderers found themselves thoroughly outclassed.

“It was okay at the start but I think we have been punished by the way we set up,” said Parkinson after the final whistle.

“We had some decent moments but Wolves are a team who’ll punish you.

“Look at the first half, there weren’t many moments where we lost concentration, but the two we did, we got done.

“I have seen them do that against a lot of sides. It’s either a moment of quality or a spell where someone switches off and it gives them a chance they invariably take.

“The morale has been hit, it was a long afternoon, we can’t hide away from that.

“They are a very, very good side packed with players going to the World Cup. They are far and away the best team in this division, no doubt about it.

“They had 5,000 fans behind them and it was tough for us in that second period. There’s still an opportunity for us to stay in this division and we have to pick ourselves up. We have two games to try and achieve what we set out to do.”

Wolves took the lead when Ben Alnwick parried Afobe’s bouncing shot into the path of Douglas, who finished well from the angle.

The second came from a straight ball over the top, taken well by ex-Bolton loanee Afobe, who skipped around Alnwick to slot home.

Things got worse in the second half as Jota produced a sublime chipped finish after a clever ball from Helder Costa and Conor Coady scored his first Wolves goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Some trouble flared towards the end of the game when celebrating Wolves fans in the hospitality boxes were confronted by angry home supporters. Police were quick on the scene to disperse the problems and Wolves’ celebrations passed off peacefully inside the stadium.
