DAISY Hill ended a 46-year wait to win the Lancashire FA Under-18s Youth Cup with a resounding 5-0 victory over Thornton Cleveleys.

The Westhoughton side last won the competition in 1968/69, when they retained the trophy they won for the first time 12 months earlier.

They were known as Naylor's 11 in those days – after club stalwart Bob Naylor who was club secretary then and still holds the role today.

Reflecting on Sunday's victory at the County Ground in Leyland, he said: "It was a good final, and the scoreline didn't flatter us, in fact it could have been more.

"We hope the players from the team will now stay on and fight for first-team places.

"We have registered a number of them with the North West Counties Football League, and hopefully some of them may see some action before the end of the season."

The team is run by manager Paul Shiels and his assistants Lee Eckersley and Steve Owen who said: "It was a very special achievement that the whole squad contributed to."

Dominant Daisy went ahead in the 19th minute when Dominic Owen fired home from close range after a Tom Waters corner led to a goalmouth scramble.

Six minutes later he was felled in the penalty box and Brad Brown converted the spot kick.

Thornton Cleveleys provided a couple of scares before half time, first having a goal disallowed for offside before forcing a super save from Daisy keeper Kristian Whalley.

Ellis Worrall and Miles Hope shone at the heart of a resolute defence which kept a strong Thornton attack at bay for long spells with Dominic Liles and Sam Lealand restricting the wide players from providing the service.

Moses Yoak provided a three-goal cushion on the hour with an unstoppable 25-yard drive before the opposition were killed off by an Owen header which slipped through the keeper's fingers and an impressive solo effort from Alex Guest.

Daisy Hill compete in the North West Youth Alliance and had battled through four tough ties to reach the final.
