OLD Boltonians clinched their first Premier Division title for 29 years with a 2-1 victory over Old Blackburnians, prompting Steve Eccleshare to describe his team as “something special”.

A point would have been enough to crown Old Bolts champions, but their opponents were also looking for the win in their bid to avoid the drop, making for a tense encounter.

“Both teams were nervous and it showed on the pitch, but we knew it would be close because they are scrapping like mad for points,” explained Eccleshare.

“Once we were ahead towards the end, though, we were much better, and played with the confidence of champions.

“The players who last won the title came down to watch, which made the occasion even better. It was just amazing.”

“The way they train and get on with each other, I knew there was something special about this team.”

All looked to be going to plan for the home team when they took the lead after just eight minutes, Tom Whittaker darting into the box past a couple of players before being brought down to win a penalty.

Lee Worsick stepped up to duly convert and take them a step closer to that elusive title.

Despite the lead, Old Bolts struggled to control the game, and as the nerves set in they gave away chances.

It wasn’t until after the break though, that they were punished. A cross from the right eluded everyone, including Cory James in goal, as the ball slipped under his legs into the back of the net.

It was an uncharacteristic mistake from the Old Bolts keeper, but his opposite number soon repaid the favour.

As the clock hit 70 minutes, Lee Worsick fortuitously grabbed his second of the game. His downward header should have been easily saved, but again the ball sneaked through the keepers legs into the net.

It meant only two goals from their opponents would prevent them from being champions, but they were determined to win it in style and they held out for all three points.

One win from their remaining two league games will also see Old Bolts break the record for the number of points in a season and it is something the manager is hoping they can achieve.

“The lads want to go and break the record so they won’t be resting just yet,” he said.

“They have been absolutely brilliant all season, and it will be nothing less than they deserve.”

Castle Hill were officially relegated from the Premier Division last Monday night, following defeat to the now champions Old Bolts.

The relegation had looked inevitable for a few weeks, but they left the league with plenty of dignity.

Manager Rob Rostron was the first to congratulate the league winners on their success, going into the changing room after the defeat and personally speaking to every Old Bolts player.

“I’m absolutely delighted for them,” he said.

“They deserve it, they have been so close over recent years, and I’m so chuffed they have finally won it.

“In terms of ourselves, it is disappointing, but the players have given everything."
