Quickfire goal blitz maintains Rams’ charge

A FLURRY of goals either side of half time helped Ramsbottom United come from behind to maintain their North West Counties League Premier title push with a 3-2 home win over Bacup Borough.

It was a tale of two penalties at the start of the match, with in-form Rammy striker Jon Robinson spurning his opportunity from the spot on six minutes before Bacup wing-back Adrian Bellamy made no mistake with his on 18 minutes.

Rammy struggled to regain a foothold in the game before Grant Spencer struck the equaliser four minutes before the break. The talented winger latched on to a botched headed clearance, hitting a sweetly struck half-volley into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Bacup’s well-organised back five then went missing, with midfielder Philip Dean carving open their defence on 43 minutes to nudge past on-rushing keeper Matthew Wrigley following a one-two with Robinson.

Robinson then turned poacher two minutes after the break, reacting quickest when the Bacup keeper fumbled an inswinging free-kick.

The Rammy forward – who was named the NWCL’s top player for November – should have put the game beyond Bacup two minutes later, and Bacup were given further hope on 49 minutes when centre midfielder Matthew Hampson turned in an Adrian Bellamy cross.

And Rammy had keeper Grant Shenton’s fingertip save to thank as they held on to second place in the table with their fourth consecutive win, watched by a season’s best league crowd of 328.
