THE Lancashire Amateur Shield took centre stage on Saturday as local teams battled it out in the second round.

One of the most impressive displays was Division One Turton giving Premier League outfit Garstang a run for their money.

Neil Johnson’s men headed into the game on the back of three straight league defeats but they were certainly up for the cup.

Despite 10 players being unavailable, a makeshift Turton opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Jasper Convey scrambled the ball home from a corner.

Garstang levelled the scores before a cross from Jordan Lomax was slotted home from 12 yards by Dave Hanlon for his first goal since moving to the club three weeks ago.

However, the second-placed Premier League outfit showed their class by scoring two goals in the last 10 minutes to break Turton’s hearts.

Boss Johnson said: “We were very unlucky to lose out in the last 10 minutes when you consider that they are a Premier Division side.

“It was a good performance despite the result.”

The Shield also delivered a Division Two derby with CMB running out 2-1 winners to complete the double over local rivals Ladybridge, having beaten them in the league on the opening day of the season.

Ron White’s side were ahead 2-0 at the break thanks to efforts by Andy Warburton and Charlie Scholes. They extended their lead early after the interval through Jimmy Winteringham.

Ladybridge grabbed a consolation goal through Kyle Dickson but that was as good as it got as Luke Kileen caused all sorts of problems for their defence.

Tempest United crashed to a heavy 6-2 defeat against Royton Town.

Playing on a 3G pitch at the Oldham Academy sppeared to affect the players and they found themselves 4-0 down at halftime after being hit by three long-range strikes in the space of five minutes.

Tempest improved in the second hald and pulled one goal back through James Hamer before 16-year-old Nathan Barlow added a second, robbing a defender on the edge of the box before rifling a shot past the keeper.

But the home side had the last word on the scoring front, adding two more to complete a convincing win.

Jordan Whittle and Ashley Morris got the goals as Bolton County went down 5-2 to Hesketh Bank.

Shield holders Eagley, who received a first-round bye, went down 1-0 to Fleetwood Hesketh in a Premier Division clash Phil Roberts’ side endured a dour first half but, having reached half time with the score 0-0, they came out stronger after the interval.

But their efforts were in vain when they were hit on the break on the hour when Mark Badderley broke the deadlock.

Despite pressing for an equaliser, Eagley came up short.

Roberts said: “The first half was awful and boring and I told the lads that at half time.

“They seemed to come out stronger but then they scored.

“We missed chance after chance and we could have had five on another day.”
