SALFORD Waggon returned to haunt Cheers Bar, following up their victory in the semi-finals of the Sam Ashworth Cup to dent the Division One leaders’ league title hopes.

Dave Barrett was on target for Cheers Bar but Salford won a tight match 2-1 through goals from Bryan Love and Steve Fagin.

In-form Daten are now two points behind with a game in hand and look favourites to snatch the title.

They will be back in league action next weekend after booking a place in the final of the cup with a 4-0 victory over Division Two’s PF Bury.

Neil Matthews scored twice and Stuart Boddy and Chris Burnett added a goal apiece to ease to victory in the semis.

The result of the weekend has to go to third-placed Atherton Town, who ran riot to beat second-bottom Victoria 17-0.

Dave Fashou led the charge with five goals, followed by Darryl Martinus (four), Stuart Rudd (three) and Gary Peachey (two), while Andrew Hughes, Lee Neal and Gary Parkinson also scored.

Queen Lizzie were also in the goals, beating bottom club Walkden 6-2 thanks to a brace apiece from Damian Winard and Paul Jones and strikes from Trevor Hill and Gary Hampson.

Second-placed Turton Bay Mare remain unbeaten in Division Two following their 4-0 victory at home to Old Boltonians, with Richard Stokes, Stuart Stokes, Phil Donlan and Martin Horridin doing the damage.

At the other end of the table, bottom side Bromley Cross put up a decent fight at Chorlton Sports, pulling two goals back through an Andy Blackburn double in their 5-2 defeat.

Bolton Lads and Girls Club kept their hopes of the Division Three title alive with a 3-1 win at home to second-placed Dobbies.

Alan Mitchell scored twice and Jimmy Reynolds got the other to cut the gap on league leaders Radcliffe Old Boys B to 10 points with four games in hand.
