Manchester League round-up

ATHERTON Town pulled off the result of the weekend with their 3-1 victory at Premier League leaders Wythenshawe Amateurs.

Midfielder Ryan Heapy put Town ahead on 25 minutes from Lee Hodgkinson’s free kick and the men from Howe Bridge Sports Centre kept their noses in front thanks to fine handling from goalkeeper Dave Woodward in the teeth of the fierce wind.

And they deservedly doubled their advantage 20 minutes from full time when Hodgkinson was again the provider for Lee Perry to fire home.

The Manchester side pulled one back, but Perry bundled home Gary Shaw’s cross to make the points safe five minutes from time.

Leigh Athletic’s 3-0 impressive home win over Hollinwood had them believing they can climb the table.

They scored all their goals in a 10-minute purple patch which started after quarter of an hour when Chris Hopwood hit a sweet left-foot free kick.

Shepherd then scored two goals in almost identical fashion thanks to headers into his path by strike-partner Paul Wilkinson.

Meanwhile, Hindsford’s makeshift defence was put to the sword at Old Alts who ran out 5-0 winners.

The Squires Lane men trailed 3-0 at half-time, and although they came into it in the second half, the home side broke away twice to add to their advantage.

Breightmet United provided further evidence they can mount a promotion push from Division One at the first-time of asking, stretching their unbeaten league run to six games with a well-deserved 3-1 victory over visitors Wilmslow Albion.

But they had to recover after going behind to an Anthony Hargreaves goal.

United equalised on the half hour when Paul Finch rounded off a well-worked move. Jones nudged the hosts ahead a minute after the restart before substitute Kevin Hughes scored with his first touch from the edge of the Wilmslow box.

Walkden side Fives Athletic were on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline at Pennington who scored first.

The visitors grabbed a deserved equaliser 10 minutes after the restart with a Luke Hodson header but former Fives stalwart Nick Sainthouse lashed home to the dismay of his former team-mates.

Mid-table Beechfield United suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Wythenshawe Town. Eddie Carroll, Ben Hyland and Mike Leach all missed good chancesfor the Swinton men.
