WANDERERS Under-18s claimed another notable scalp with a 4-2 home victory against their Liverpool counterparts on Saturday.

Against a Reds side that featured talent estimated to be worth in the region of £5million, Jamie Thomas kept up his recent scoring run with a brace while Will Abbots and Nathan Burke also got on the scoresheet to make it three successive FA U18 Premier League wins for David Lee and Tony Kelly’s youngsters.

The visitors took the lead at Lostock from the penalty spot through Sheyi Ojo on 25 minutes but Wanderers were level before half time when Thomas collected Jimmy Ball’s pass to lob the Liverpool goalkeeper from 20 yards.

Thomas capped a bright start to the second period when he finished with an angled left-footer after an excellent pass from Elliot Newby.

Burke made it 3-1 with an 18-yard drive before Abbots scored the fourth by converting Newby’s cross from close range.

Liverpool scored a consolation late on through Dharius Waldron but they could not deny the young Whites another impressive win.

Lee said: “We thoroughly deserved the win because of the players’ attitude and desire, combined with some good phases of play.

“It is testament to the talent that we have within our academy ranks.”

Just two defeats in nine league games in 2014 has propelled Wanderers to eighth in the North Group table.

Lee’s boys travel to face Manchester United on Saturday, kick off 11am.
