JLLOYD Samuel admits Wanderers have lost their cutting edge in recent weeks.
Concerned at the recent slump in results, which have seen the club lose their last four games in league and cup, the Whites defender has conceded that standards have slipped throughout the squad since Everton were beaten at the Reebok at the end of October.
But Samuel, who has been one of Wanderers’ most consistent performers this term, has backed his team-mates to bounce back to form when they travel to take on Fulham this weekend.
“We were not as sharp as we have been but that’s something we can work on and put right,” he said.
“That’s what we will be doing this week because we want to get back to the levels and type of performances we put in against Spurs and Everton.”
Sunday’s defeat to Rovers — a ninth successive home game without a win against their local rivals — was particularly galling for the full-back.
“We wanted to do well for the fans because they have given us great backing recently and it was even more disappointing because it was a derby game,” he said.
“It was one of those games. It wasn’t pretty — it was never going to be — and it was all about which team got in front.
“They took their chances but we couldn’t convert ours. Ricardo Gardner had a couple and Matt Taylor’s free-kick was another that comes to mind, and then there was the one that Ivan Klasnic had cleared off the line at the end.”
Skipper Kevin Davies has also spoken of his determination to shake the club from its current malaise.
Wanderers have never won a Premier League game at Craven Cottage, but the striker is desperate to find a degree of consistency that has been lacking for much of the season so far.
“We have been focusing on getting our levels of consistency back again because at the moment we are not doing that.
“We go on a good run, get within touching distance of the pack and towards the top 10, then we have a couple of defeats. We have to crack on again.
“We were looking okay against Liverpool until Sean Davis was sent off, we had Manchester United hanging on and we outplayed Spurs only to draw.
“So we may have hit a rut in the road at the moment, and certainly no-one would say we haven’t.
“It is frustrating for us, the manager and, of course, the fans. We will be looking to take the next step on Saturday but we are not that far away. Another win and we are under way again.”
