KEVIN Davies has hailed the bulldog spirit shown by Wanderers to claim a point at Fulham on Saturday.
The Whites skipper reckons the resilient performance was the prefect riposte to anyone who questioned the togetherness in the dressing room, after a difficult week at the Reebok.
Gary Megson has played down talk of fringe players rocking the boat as he led his side to Craven Cottage — but Davies insists the spirit shown in the 1-1 draw was the only way to silence the doubters.
“It’s been going on all week in the press but as players, we’re very much together,” the captain said.
“We have been in situations like this before and use that as experience.
“The bunch of lads are in it together and willing to fight, as you saw out there.
“Heads can go down, especially when you look at the table. It can be difficult but the reaction and the way we got about Fulham shows that we can take something from the game.”
Despite the point – only their second at Fulham in nine league visits - Wanderers remain in the bottom three and now face a £25,000 fine from the Football Association after picking up six yellow cards.
One booking, given to Davies in the second minute of the game by referee Steve Bennett, also means he will miss next Saturday’s crunch game with Wolves.
And the front man was disappointed that the decision was made so early in the game.
“I didn’t really catch him – I thought he rode the tackle a bit,” he said. “He wasn’t injured but in the first couple of minutes you want to set an example and get everyone going, I might have mis-timed it slightly but the referee could probably have warned me.
“You go to ground, you risk a booking, but it’s happened now and I miss a big game at Wolves.”
Recent results have seen Wanderers slip into the bottom three, but Davies insists the point at Fulham can now be a turning point.
“In our situation we probably could have done with all three points,” he admitted.
“But the lads have to take something out of the game. It’s a difficult place to come and we’ve got a poor record here.
“We had lost the last four, one in the cup, but have played some difficult sides. Prior to that we were playing pretty well.
“We’re trying to tell everyone we’re not a bad side. We have had a good week’s training and you could tell before the game that everyone was up for it.
“It’s a point, and hopefully we can go on a run ourselves now.”
