GARY Shaw inspired Atherton Town to an impressive first win of their Premier Division campaign, 3-2 at Stockport Georgians.
Trailing to a goal just before half time, Town were in front within seven minutes of the restart when they took advantage of two penalty awards – new signing Michael Clegg converting both.
Georgians equalised from a corner but Shaw set up the winner for Sutcliffe 10 minutes from time – his third goal in two games.
Hindsford went third in the table with a second win in four days, Luke Sylvester scoring seven minutes from the end of a 1-0 win at Bury Amateurs.
Manager Colin Glendon was delighted with the result, if not the performance. “I told the players that last year when we played badly we’d have got battered 5-0, 6-0 or 7-0,” he said.
Leigh Athletic maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 win at Hollinwood with two quick goals from Paul Wilkinson.
Pennington kicked off their Division One campaign with a 1-1 draw at Beechfield United but there wase defeat for Breightmet United, who went down 3-0 at Chapel Town.Meanwhile, Fives Athletic were second best throughout their opening Division One fixture at Monton Amateurs who won 5-1. Fives’ only strike came from Wilkinson.
