WANDERERS fan Keith Thompson reflects on a disappointing weekend for the Whites...

I would not like to be Gary Megson today. By far, the main topic of conversation on the free coach to Wigan was our perceived surrender in Lisbon.

Thousands of fans have paid a great deal of money to follow the Wanderers in Europe this season.

In return we received house arrest in Belgrade, assault in Madrid and now, in the eyes of many, a slap in the face from our own club in Lisbon.

Many fans would be quite happy to win the UEFA Cup at the expense of Premier League survival, citing Coventry City. Despite 34 years in the top flight, all their fans ever remember and discuss is the FA Cup win in 1987.

So here we are, its five past three, Bolton have their strongest and fully rested side, a great following cheering them on and Wigan are down to 10 men. Could it get any better?

Well it certainly didn't for Megson, as what followed was a dismal, inept and spiritless performance that left the Bolton faithful ashamed, angry and convinced that this was the first of the final few nails in our Premiership coffin.

The coach journey home was a sombre 40 minutes, discussions unanimously ending with the same questions.

Why was Diouf rested in the week and then substituted at half time?

Why was he substituted when we were losing 1-0 against ten men?

Why were there only 12 people in the stadium that could not see that the way to succeed on this pitch was to use the flanks?

Why was Stelios not in the team?

Why could the Whites only have five attempts on target against ten men?

The conclusions from the resulting discussions are also unanimous Megson was shown to be a second rate man manager and tactician and should never have been appointed.

Regardless of which league we are in next season, the vast majority of this squad is not good enough The penny pinching and lack of financial support that so frustrated Sam Allardyce has finally come home to roost.

Our club is now following in the footsteps of Leeds, Bradford Barnsley and Swindon.

What next then for the Whites?

Instead of beating Wigan to help guarantee our Premier League status, we now need to beat either Man Utd, Arsenal or Chelsea.

Our next away win? Coventry?
