Quality stuff from Wanderers on Sunday.

Great to hear the Match of the Day 2 pundits – David Ginola especially – waxing lyrical over the Whites too.

I was dubious about the team selection before kick-off.

Everton are a decent side and we’ve looked flimsy this season without Fabrice Muamba in the starting XI, but Mark Davies had a cracking game.

He is a skilful player, no doubt, but he’s combative too. He gets the tackles in, and alongside Stu Holden – who must be a sure thing for player of the season already – it is like having two little terriers in midfield.

They are a joy to watch.

Johan Elmander, however, is not a winger, he is a striker. So it is frustrating to see him picked out of position in favour of three out-and-out wide men – Chungy, Martin Petrov and Rodrigo.

I feel like the manager is picking Elmander because he doesn’t want to upset him, now that the excellent Daniel Sturridge is on the scene.

Fair enough, we won 2-0, but we looked vulnerable on the right because the Sweden forward is not used to the defensive role that a winger must play.

Everton, I think everyone including David Moyes agree, were very poor, but on another day or against a different team, our defensive frailties would have been exposed.

A quick word about the Toffees.

They’ve had a poor season, so far, by their standards, but it’s interesting to note – as it was noted on the Beeb on Sunday night – that had they won at the Reebok, they would’ve gone above us.

It is funny how teams are perceived to be having good and bad seasons.

Liverpool (6th) bad; Bolton (8th) good; Everton (13th) bad; Blackpool (16th) good.

Moyes looked tired and frustrated but Everton have so far stuck by their manager and good on them.

He has transformed the club, since taking over in 2002.

They are having a season-long blip but it is good to see a club that does not make rash decisions.

I don’t like to say this, but he could one day be to Everton what Alex Ferguson is to Man United.

Let’s hope our Scottish manager can bring similar glory to the Reebok one day.

Speaking of which, the Wigan FA Cup replay midweek will be a good opportunity for the manager to tinker with the team.

The line-up should actually be pretty exciting.

Assuming Owen Coyle rings the changes and rests a few weary legs, I fully expect to see Rodrigo, Petrov and possibly Klasnic in the team.

I really hope we progress through to the next round, because Fulham away is a tricky but is winnable tie, and if we are victorious then it is Quarter Finals time.
