CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Astley and Tyldesley made an impressive start to their home programme in the Northern Combination when they beat Sheffield 81-69 at Gin Pit on Sunday.

Sheffield took an early lead, but A&T quickly levelled the scores. The match was still level after nine races, but the home side finished strongly in the remaining six races.

Adam Phillips raced unbeaten, with Joel Partington and Stefan Whitelegg losing just once each, in an outstanding team performance.

Phillips won the opening round of the North West Go-Race Grand Prix series, winning all of his five races. Sheffield's Kyle Brough was runner-up, with Partington, the new North West U14 Track Cycling Champion, third.

A&T host the opening round of the Northern Fours and Junior Grands Prix series on Sunday, starting at 1 pm.

The track is located at the Astley & Tyldesley Miners’ Welfare Club, Meanley Road, Gin Pit, Astley. M29 7DW.
