Fabio could still come calling

GARY Megson believes Wanderers will start supplying England internationals if they can beat the drop and force their way back into the top half of the Premiership.

The Bolton boss reckons he has players in his ranks - inluding new signings Matt Taylor and Gary Cahill - who could be on Fabio Capello's radar, but he accepts that the new national coach is less unlikely to consider them because they don't play for a successful club.

Of the 30-strong squad Capello named for next Wednesday's friendly against Switzerland, only eight play for clubs in the bottom half of the Premiership.

And although he is convinced Kevin Nolan has what it takes, he understands why he has been overlooked.

"I think we have got players with the potential at some stage to get in there, but not when you are down in the lower reaches of the division," he said. "This league is the best and the hardest in the world and a lot of the world's best players play at this level.

"So you will find that most of the England squad will come from players in the top half of the table.

"If we can get a successsful team doing well, it stands to reason that the individuals within that team will start getting a little more exposure."

Nolan was touted strongly for an England call when he he was mentioned in dispatches by Steve McClaren. But a dip in form saw him drop out of the running and he doesn't appear to have been considered by Capello.

But he got a timely boost from one of his arch Premiership rivals this week.

Aston Villa midfielder, Nigel Reo-Coker, reckons the Wanderers' skipper is one of a number of players who just don't get a look in because they don't play for the more fashionable clubs.

He believes the inclusion of his Villa team-mate, Gabriel Agbonglahor, in Capello's provisional squad has opened the door for many more players outside the big four.

"You can read into that what you like," Reo-Coker said. "For me, there are so many other top English players that are not playing for the top four clubs and might not be getting the recognition that they deserve.

"I'm a big fan of Kevin Nolan. I think he has been doing consistently well for a number of years now. I think he deserves his chance for England but he doesn't make the headlines because he is at Bolton.

"It's really down to Fabio Capello. He will establish the side he wants to and watch the games he wants to, depending on how he wants to play." Megson certainly sees his 25-year-old captain as a key figure for Wanderers, but stops short of putting him in the England frame just yet.

"He's done terrific for us," the manager said. "He has great attributes and he's got some thi9ngs he needs to work on to kick into that level. But he has done really well."

Gordon you are a "professional" writer stealing a living.

" less unlikely to consider them because they don't play for a successful club"

is a double negative, means precisely the opposite to what you presumably meant.

Grammar suspect content nil.

Came on the forum to break the news that Eddie Davies wants out, the guy will wave goodbye during the close season.

Do not know the reason why yet but will keep you informed.

Gartside is now looking for a fresh invester, me thinks personally that my thoughts from months ago is that we are to be bought out.

Watch this space ............

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley says goalkeeper Robert Green should dye his hair "or do something else silly" to gain a place in the England squad. (Various)

If we could get Julie to dye Kevin Nolan's hair then he surely has a chance also!!

Time for someone else to buy into Bolton or replace Phil Gartside. Whatever will replace the ineptitude of the leadership of BWFC. Whilst Megson is doing a decent job with what he has to work with and what is available Bolton have been very poorly handled for the last two years. That stems from Gartside. He is absolutley pathetic. Why does he think he can pull the same stunt every transfer window (making out we tried to sign someone but we were unlucky). This window was preperation for the championship. I don't think that will happen because Megson will keep us up but not signing a striker (a decent one anyway) with £15m quid to spend is ridiculous.

Who should he have signed then with this £15m? Which top quality striker signs for a club getting 18 thousand for home games and is relegation threatened?

We have signed top strikers before, Anelka the obvious one not to mention Borgetti who was never given a fair chance because of how we play, the fact that a striker will not come to us because of low crowds is not how I see it, I see it that if the wallet content is enough, then they will sign!!
Posted by: Lancashire73, Bolton on 2:06pm Sat 2 Feb 08
Anelka is not just the obvious one, he is the only one who is a top class Prem striker that we have signed. Anelka would not have signed for us if it was February and we were 3 points from relegation either. We were looking at unproven strikers from abroad and over priced reserves from other sides.

We should have had a replacement for Anelka waiting in the wings to sign the day after Anelka left. The signing's Megson have made are good - Taylor & Cahill potential England squad players, Steinson looks good in his first two games and Rasiak is a gamble. Rasiak's getting some bad press but those fans who are slagging him off now , what will they do when he scores? Sit down and call him crap? I doubt it....
It's obvious that Megson's putting a lot of faith in Dioufy producing the goods and I'm a beliver that Diouf could get upto double figures this season and keep us up with 42 points.... We'll have to win the UEFA cup to be in it again next season !!

Why be ashamed? I thought we would lose, which was not an unrealistic thought on Friday when you consider we have not won away since April 07, looking spartan up front since the sale of Anelka, plus most teams on a bad run do ok against Bolton (Sunderland, Derby, Fulham). Why should we be ashamed, I am not. I am really pleased we got 3 points, which could be vital come the end of the season over a fellow relegation rival.
