ATHERTON LR marked the passing of club stalwart and non-league legend Eddie Taylor by claiming all three points in the last minute of their North West Counties League First Division home clash with Chadderton.

News that the 69-year-old loyal supporter – who was known as ‘the man with the rattle’ due to him taking a rattle to LR games for the last 30-plus years – had died filtered through to the club during the match and the players rallied together to secure a thrilling victory which would have sent Eddie’s rattle spinning around in its iconic way.

Jordan Cover gave LR a 55th-minute lead which looked to be enough to claim the three points.

When Chadderton levelled in injury time it looked like two points had slipped through the Crilly Park men’s fingers.

But up popped Kristian Holt with virtually the last touch of the game to win it. The reverse fixture in August saw the Oldham outfit win 3-2 with Gino Pulvino and current Southport striker Vinny Mukendi scoring for LR.

LR remain sixth but moved five points clear of Chadderton in eighth.

Daisy Hill are still chasing an elusive win after they lost 2-0 at home to Irlam, conceding in the 47th and 74th minutes.

Daisy have now gone 17 matches without a win and face another tough test next weekend at home to promotion-chasing 1874 Northwich.

Atherton Collieries failed to score for the first time since last April when they suffered their first defeat of the year, a 3-0 home defeat to Rochdale Town in the League Challenge Cup third round.

The two sides last met in December with Rochdale securing a shock 4-2 victory in the league.

Jason Hill struck twice before an own goal sealed a convincing victory.
