BREIGHTMET United manager Simon Wilcox is planning to regroup in the summer with the aim of mounting a promotion challenge next season.

The Moss Park outfit ended their Division One campaign on Saturday with a 2-0 defeat at Hollinwood which summed up the inconsistency that has frustrated the manager.

“For 20 minutes we played some decent football then all of a sudden Hollinwood went up the other end and scored two quick goals,” Wilcox said.

“I had a rant at half time and got a reaction in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the second half, then it all petered out.

“In the end it was a game you’d really want to forget.

“It was our last game of the season and you could tell.”

Wilcox hopes to keep much of his young squad together but aims to add some much-needed experience.

“I’m looking for automatic promotion next season, and if I can bring in one or two experienced heads there’s no doubt we will be capable of doing that,” he added.

“I’ve often said I wouldn’t swap my lads for any other team and I meant it. It’s just been a topsy-turvy season.

“We had a bad start when I couldn’t get my best team out and when we did we went on a decent run.

“At times some of our football was untouchable, other times we looked like we’d just got out of bed.

“We played Elton Vale off the park, beating them 7-2 when they’d been on a magical run, then we lost to the bottom club 4-0 the next week and from then on the season seemed to go downhill.

“I’ve got a good set of players, smashing lads, but their performances have just been a bit hit and miss.

“That’s something we’ll be looking to put right next season.”

Leigh Athletic, who suffered a number of heavy defeats in the early weeks of the season, are ending their Division One campaign on form after a 6-1 win at Chadderton Reserves.

With three games to play, they are on course for a mid-table finish.
